Yea, it's 87 octane according to the manual.
And I've always filled it with 87 octane.

Do a search on "octane" in the General or Technical sections and you should get a wealth of information on octane levels.
Some people claim to feel better performance, some people don't. And some it depends more on the brand of gas. But I think the only accepted "fact" is that the mileage is better on 87 octane.

The 2.5RS engines are designed to run on 87 octane. For a stock engine (no mods to timing, fuel computer, etc.), it'll run best on 87. 87 will give the best mileage as well as power (for a stock engine) because it burns faster and hotter. The higher the octane numbers, the less combustible the fuel is.

The reason why some cars require higher octane is that the car's timing/compression is designed to take advantage of the higher octane level -- the fuel won't detonate prematurely.

I fill on plain-jane 87 and she runs great!

Good call Penphoe. It's totaly the right answer. If your car isn't setup to use a higer octane, then your just wasting your money. Unless for some strange reason you hear a knock/ping with 87. And no, the higer numbers don't do a better job of cleaning your motor either. Thats an industry wives tale.

I'll back Skidd up on the white lie of the "higher octane cleans your engine cauz it has special additives".

Why do they always advertise the higher octanes are the (only) ones with the cleaning agents -- so they can sell more of the more expensive stuff that's why! What they don't tell you is that the cleaning agents are in all grades of their fuels.

Greetings! According to the dealer and the service department where I got my Impreza, I was told that it doesn't matter which octane level fuel type you use. It's more that the engine is configured to run on a minimum of 87 octane.

My experiences in the past with my other cars have proven that a higher level octane gas gave me a smoother more consistent burn. Moreover, it provided me with much more power and better mileage.

While I had an Eagle Talon, I used to play a game with my family. Every time my mom or sister would borrow my car and fill up the tank for me, I'd drive the car for about 10 blocks and guess which level of octane they filled up with. After the first 2 months of playing this game, I've yet to be wrong!
