Default School me on buying a used car out of state.

I am looking into buying a car in FL, and wanted to know what I need to do.

I would fly down there and buy the car. After that I'm not to sure as to what I have to do to get it back up to MD and register it here.

So who can map this process out for me?

Thanks

-Evan

1) buy car, have owner leave plates on car so you can drive it back
2) drive car back
3) Go to DMV with title
4) profit

You are pretty much on track. You can fly down, purchase and drive it back with no issues. Some states, most likely Maryland, will let you buy a temp tag for travel, usually less than 10 bucks.

So, you fly to FL, pay the guy, get a Bill of Sale made and sign etc, and drive the 9+ hours back home. You then bring it to your DMV and pay your taxes and turn in your title to be retitled in MD. If you have a loan, they will retitle it and send it to your bank for you in most cases.

VA abd MD both have trip permits. You can get a VA one online in like 5 mins. You need the VIN of the vehicle and a credit card. Its like $5.

Make sure you and the seller get the bill of sale notarized if you're getting a good deal. MD will use the blue book value of car if you don't have a notarized bill of sale. I bought a Miata from Californina for $9K that booked for $12.5K and didn't have a notarized BOS from the seller so I had to pay the tax on the $12.5K. $175 down the tubes.

I had no problems using DAS autoshippers from Cali to MD for $630 though it did take a while. I just didn't have the time to drive cross country. I would have loved to.

Okay, I just went through this myself (buying and selling), so I'll give you an outline.

-- Look into getting Transit / Temp tags from the state you're buying from.

I got 30 day transit tags from NY to drive my car down. If the owner's an idiot he'll let you drive down w/ his tags, otherwise, if you're selling your RS keep the tags and slap 'em on the new car. Look up what all the requirements are for transit tags for the state you're buying from.

New York needed an insurance binder, bill of sale / proof of ownership, identification, etc..

Almost all states require insurance before you can drive the car back, call your agent and say you want to buy a car out of state. They can provide you w/ 30 day temporary insurance and fax you an insurance card or whatever else you'll need.

If there's a lien of the vehicle things get a little more involved. You'll need to get a pay off letter from the lien-holder to register the car in MD. If you're taking a check to pay of the lien, make sure the owner AND the bank who has the lien are on the check. That way the guy can't cash it and buy a TV and not pay the bank. If the lien is $2000 and you're buying the car for $3000 the bank will take the check , pay off the lien and give him the left over $1000.

If you are concerned for your safety, you can always let Kev drive - he's slow enough to drive Miss Daisy!
