Default Chrysler Confirms Production of the Dodge Hornet Supermini

Chrysler is about to announce that the Dodge Hornet Euro B-Car is going to be produced. The car will be produced by Chinese automaker Chery and there will not be a Chrysler version of the car.

The concept version of the Hornet was unveiled at the 2006 Geneva Auto Show and Chrysler could unveil a pre-production version of the car at the Frankfurt Auto Show this fall.
The concept Hornet had a supercharged 170 horsepower 4-cylinder engine that was capable of going 0-60 in 6.7 seconds.
It hasn't been confirmed if we will get it here in the U.S. Chrysler could use this car in the U.S.

The Hornet name is left over from AMC ( American Motor Corp) that Chrysler bought out to get the Jeep brand. AMC was a mix of poor build quality and leading edge concepts. The Outback we take for granted had its roots in the AMC Spirit. The Hornet and Pacer were small compact cars but they came with a fuel efficient build or the AMC 350 CU v-8 as well.

Well enough useless history, I only commented because my dad had a Hornet as a company car in 75.

I am happy to see that it is going into production, but more than a little disappointed to hear that it's gonna be built in China.
I think this car could be a real hit for Dodge - interesting styling, should be quite fuel efficient and hopefully will have good handling... basically an American Mini Cooper... that is unfortunately built by Chery.

Wonder what the arrangement is to keep the Chinese from stealing the whole design.

I think they are smart enough not to steal a design from an American car company.

They made the military spec hummer HMMMV (High Mobility Multipurpose Military Vehicle) and Bradely fighting vehicle for the Army. Hmmmm...the lowest bidder always gets the government contracts.

The idea of a new Chrysler has the same affect on me as a commercial for a new toothbrush.

I've never been a big Chrysler fan, but I am a car fan, and I like to see good cars come out on market. And if they're from US automakers, even better. Chrysler should come out with this one in the US market. It's an appealing model.

I could do without the "look at me I'm an air intake" intake on the side of the hood...

I see Dodge Hornet drivers complaining about all manner of vehicles pulling up next to them and asking "That thing got a Hemi??" and then laughing hysterically as they drive off.

Funny, I was thinking more people would ask, "That thing got a tarp so I don't have to look at it ever again?"

Personally, I think Dodge should hurry up and get both the Hornet and the Deamon to market as soon as possible.
I think both cars would be really good additions to their lineup and provide much needed small cars in their showroom.
While I'm not a big Dodge/Chrysler fan I think the Deamon, although being late to the game, would give consumers another option to think about when purchasing a Miata/Solstice/Sky.
And the Hornet would be something no other American company can compete with directly, especially if they brought both the supercharged version and a NA version to market.

I say go for it and do it quick!
