Default Sacramento Dealer Experience (long)

I picked up my silver WRX wagon today. For those who will be shopping, here’s my experience with the dealers I worked with in the Sacramento area.

Maita. This is where I bought my car. Chris Jones works the Internet for Maita and emailed me when he saw from my posts on I-Club that talked about getting a car. I made the deal with him because he brought the price down by charging less over invoice than others in town and by finding a car at another dealership that already had some of my options installed. The other dealers were going to use a car on their lot and charge me more for installation of the options. Chris was easy to work with - no pressure - and quickly made all of the arrangements for the dealer swap needed to get me a car. He has a WRX wagon himself with a few mods.

Senator. I worked with Rance. He’s a nice guy, did not pressure me, and I wanted to buy from him because of his attitude and he’d taken me out on a couple of test drives. On the first go ‘round we only got down to 750 over invoice. When I was offered 500 over by Roseville, Senator matched that. But they wanted to charge me what seemed like a lot for option installation. Interestingly, they claimed that the cost was high for putting in the mirror/compass because of how difficult it is to snake the wire. But according to posts to this board, that wire is already there in all WRXs.

Shingle Springs. Talked with them over the phone. They ended up with almost exactly the same offer as Senator.

Roseville. The Roseville Auto Mall has a bad rep with everyone I talked to and the Sube dealer didn’t make it better. They have a 2,999 market value markup sticker on WRXs. I only went there to look at colors but the salesman almost immediately said they would sell one for under MSRP. So why have the sticker markup? The Roseville Internet guy contacted me after I asked for a bid through the Subaru web page. He said they did 500 over invoice for Internet transactions. Since this was less than Senator, the only other dealership I’d negotiated with at the time, I said I’d take it and told him what options I wanted. He said he’d figure out the price and get back to me either later that day or the following morning. When I didn’t hear from him, I called the following afternoon and was told it was his day off and he wouldn’t be in for another two days. I tried again the next day he was back and he’d already left work when I called. I left a message to call me back and he never did. Guess they didn’t want the business.

Green Valley. I called and they offered me their one remaining wagon, a white one with the security upgrade, for 21995, which included the destination charge. Wow, as near as I can tell, this is under invoice. But I wanted silver, they thought it’d be 3 weeks before they got a new shipment and didn’t know if their cost for the next ones would enable them to keep the price that low. So I went with Maita even though their price was higher than Green Valley’s might have been. I also was willing to pay a little more for getting the car from a dealer closer to home. The guy I talked to at Green Valley was really nice over the phone.

In fairness to Senator and Shingle Springs, I ended up saving a little by deciding to put in the air filter myself, but that was only a small factor in getting the car from Maita for 400 less than those two wanted.

As is always the case, YMMV - you may do better or worse with these dealers than I. Happy Hunting.

Chris kicks ass Got my car at maita as well (my mom got her legacy there too)

Looks like you skipped Gold Rush Subaru up in Auburn... Definatly the best test drive route out of all of them

Yeah, I wish I had driven up to Auburn or Shingle Springs for better test roads. In Sacramento city tests you just hope you reach an intersection with a chance to turn with the light and noone in front of you. Auburn didn't have a silver wagon when I was looking and I was hopeful of making a deal in Sacto. And by the time I got down to negotiating with these dealers, I didn't need a drive anymore, I was hooked. Chris did a great job of finding the right car at another dealer and trading for it. I have 393 miles left to the break in... but who's counting? Shopping the net like mad for 17 inch rims and wheels.

I think Green Valley is the name of the dealership near Fairfield. I presume it's named after the road which is an exit from 80 east of town, or the area the road was named after at any rate.
