Unhappy i have a big cooling system problem!

So I was driving down the road in my 2002 WRX, and I was driving it moderatly hard. I shifted from first to second and coolant sprayed out the grill and up onto the windshield! Thats a problem. The heater also stopped working. So, I am attending WyoTech, and I have made a determination on what the problem could be. I think I have a hole in my radiator and a restriction in one of my heater hose lines. Any input would be great. I would also like to know if this happens a lot on my particular year and model.

Thanks for the help.
Bryan

Well we can't really say if "this" happens a lot because we don't know exactly what did happen. It's very possible your radiator got hit by a rock and is leaking, but only a visual inspection and/or pressure test can show where the leak is. We can't do that over the Internet.

Oh yea, I hear ya. Its already in the shop for an appointment tuesday morning. I'm just curious as to how something like this could have happened and what caused it.

02 radiators do have a tendency to fail at the seam between the top tank and the main section of the radiator (where the crimp seal is) - have also seen a couple of pictures of radiators where the top tank actually cracked... just get under the hood and take a look - shouldn't take much looking to figure it out.

I have a 02 WRX the radiator also cracked on the top. If you do the radiator make sure to replace the stupid thermostat. My radiator failed before 50k thermostat after 50k.

Same thing here on my 02. How much are we looking at for a new radiator? Couple hundred...or more?

so you are attending wyotech and you come on here to ask opinions about why your car is spewing coolant? (just giving you crap, sorry! )

I don't think the endcaps will usually fail catastrophically like that, they just leak all the time instead. My guess is rock through the radiator.

you can get aftermarket ones that are better and near OE fit for under $300... (My '02 is leaking slowly on the end caps, not too serious yet but enough that i've priced out new ones)

Actually, if it's from a rock, it could be that your radiator is fine but your heater core needs to be replaced... All depends on where the leak is coming from.

The heater core is inside the car, how could a rock get to it? And if it leaks you get water on your feet not out the grill.
If you're referring to the thing in front of the radiator that's the AC condensor, and yes those do get nailed by rocks often. In fact the condensor covers up most of the radiator and is more exposed, however those pesky rocks do have a way of finding their way around it to the small area of the radiator that IS exposed. Don't ask me how I know that.

Whoops, that i didn't know. Scratch what i said earlier.

In that case, it's the radiator. Or the hoses.

If do need a new radiator and don't want to spend the $$ on a performance one, check out www.radiatorbarn.com . I checked and they don't have WRX radiators online, but they don't have all their radiators online. I've bought from them a few times and they prices are great and I usually got my radiator within a day or 2 of ordering it.
