Default portable chiller/AC/air conditioner for use in the garage?

Anybody have any real-world experience with one? I'd like to get one for use in my two-car garage. Summers here are hot and muggy....something to take the edge off would be nice. I'm not expecting miracles.

I see quite a few between $300 and $500. Waste of money or worth a shot?

I've been in some body shops that had swamp coolers and they were very effective. They had the huge ones that cost more than what you are wanting to spend but they also had a lot more shop space.

As long as you vent them properly, they work great.

I've used those same commercial units in a datacenter app. I'm spending my own $$, so the budget is smaller. Panasonic, Heier, Royal Sovereign, etc....lots of brands out there. 12000 BTU for $400 seems to be the going price.

quoted because its true. i have one thats been running for 4 years straight, except when i have to stop it to drain it, and when it died by my warranty took care of that.

i have it mounted on a milk crate, draining into a bucket, that makes life so much easier.

and the shorter and straighter the vent hose the better.

lastly mine has two intake vents. one of which has no serviceable user access, and no filter, it almost seems designed to need professional service, i cover that vent with a filter i can take off and clean.

If you feel like driving to NJ, I have a next-to-new DeLonghi Pinguino in my basement! Make offer via PM if interested. Came from my aunt & uncles NYC apartment....used < 5 times by the look of things.

try for twelve, it will be an effective ten, most garages are not well insulated

mine is fully insulated and drywalled except the garage door itself (which isn't properly sealed either from the light I see around it).

thats my point. most garages have to be that way, to design better insulation around the main door would cost sooo much more. and be a lot more complicated.
