Things to look out for when buying an older Legacy

Here is the story, my mom just bought a brand new Outback, and she wants to get an old Legacy wagon to haul things around in that are dirty, etc. I found a few Legacy wagons online, and I wanted to find out if there are any particular mechanical problems that we should keep an eye out for while looking around. Any advice?

check the axles, check the clutch.. hell just make sure the auto shifts easily... rust is a big problem if you are in the northeast....

Do the axles have a problem with breaking or stress fractures? Just curious what the problem is there.

both inner CV joints on my 93 were shot... ripped, and leaking grease

Oil leaks (front main seal) and Do Not buy an air suspension model!

Glenn! holy crap, I totally forgot about the air suspension.. AVOID IT.. my XT4 turbo had it.. bad news

and the front crank seal is an annoyance, but if the Tbelt hasnt been done, it can EASILY be done when the Tbelt is done

you really got to pay attention to the tranny. if the car has got over 130k watch out. i have a 93 5spd with123k and i picked up a 91 for some parts 113k on it and the tranny is shot im puttin in one this week on it before a sell it. my 93 orignal5 spd tranny no probs. i talked to other sub owners and they told me those year legacys had probs with the auto tranny. also the drive lines on the fwd models they always have bad cvs on um. oh yes avoid the air susp.make sure it idles nice not noisey.should be good

Mine's going into the shop soon for this for an oil leak... Doing the timing belt too. Save on labor later.

IIRC, they had a parking problem. i.e., it wouldn't come out of park when expected. There was a recall...
