did the front overhang shrink? the hatch looks uncommonly nice from the side profile, which I hated in older pictures.
The sedan looks nice in red, but yucky in white....and the tail still is gross.

Thanks! Yeah, I really, really like that shade of red. It is a very deep and nice color. I don't recall ever seeing that shade of red (at least on any USDM Imprezas from the 2.5RS up).

I still think it looks better in real life than it does in photos. Those original Motor Trend photos did not do it justice, and actually seeing the car in real sunlight (instead of under show lighting at the NYIAS) and having been able to really walk around it for the first time makes it look better, I think. FWIW, I am still not a big fan of the new style, and I'm still waiting for the STi - hopefully that will have slightly more aggressive styling. I do have to say that fit and finish wise, these look a lot nicer than the previous generation. Granted I'm comparing it to my 5-year old '02, but the way the parts go together just looks a lot nicer on these models. Like the hood and door lines just seem like they fit together much nicer and more uniformly. I'm really curious to see how it drives, and the few that I have talked to that were at the event have been blown away by the car. These are all Good Signs.

Outback Sport has a different grille. Note the chrome strip at the top, the narrower chrome side edges and the dip at the bottom center of the grille.

This appears to be the same grille, or very similar to that being used on the STI, but with a mesh pattern instead.

My coworker noticed this first and told me that I should try to take a joy ride. I figured such an attempt would have ended badly for me, I got permission to take photos and I wasn't going to press my luck. The guys that were actually at the event drove the cars, and they liked them - check the MAIC forum for the "I got to drive a 2008" thread. These will also be on dealer lots within the next few months.

So I was driving by a local subaru shop and pulled in to take a couple of pictures. I parked my Mazda3 beside it for a little comparo - since these two are going to be fighting it out in market.

I couldn't do much about the shadow so the pictures aren't great but here they are. They had a grey 2.5i premium in the showroom - it looked good.

My girlfriend actually exclaimed "Wow Subaru made a car that looks good." That's a good sign, cause she's a fan of subarus but can't get over their ugliness - she also quite liked the profile of the Tribeca.

Hate to say it, but although very similar in overall design, I think the Mazda looks a bit better. I think the fender flares and the overall appearance of the mazda is much sportier than the impreza.

The Mazda does look better I have seen the new Impreza in person and it looks like crap. I'm not a real fan of the Mazda but the shape of its hood make it look a little more aggressive. It makes me sick when a car company and car company copies another car companys body design this is just rediculous. I am more than a little mad at Subaru right now. I won't be buying another Subaru in the future if they keep this up. Subaru's styling may have been weird back in the day, but it was original at least. I liked the Bug eyed cars and I liked the 04 to 05 cars I could even tolerate the 06 to 07s. Seems as though Subaru is continuing to go downhill with their styling.
