Default If i buy this car... will it break me.

Hey guys, here's whats up...

I am currently involved in buying a 2004 WRX from someone for a damn good price (12k). I dont make alot of money, but i can definaly afford his asking price. Heres the mod list:

(car is tuned at 309WHP , 319tq)
Mods:
Machined Stock 2.5L Shortblock (about 5000-6000 miles on the motor)
Turboback
TurboSmart Blow-Off Valve
Polished Hood Pins
Blitz Turbo Timer
HKS Turbo Timer Harness
Copper Spark Plugs (I was told it was better)
Exedy Twin Plate Clutch/Flywheel
Ultimate Racing T3/T04 (Turbonetics 600 hp)
Supertech .5mm oversize valves
Top Mount Intercooler
Cometic Head gaskets
Tial WasteGate
uppipe
785cc Fuel Injectors
Cosworth Oil Catch Can
Up Pipe
Cold Air Intake
Fuel Pump
Oil Pump

The guy who is selling it says he hasnt done anything with the stock transmission, he also says that due to the large injectors, he gets about 15mpg O_O (worse then my F250)....

heres the thing... im primary looking for a car that will be my daily driver. I currently drive a rs, and i put about 350 miles on it a week. I work full time and i am a full time medical student. I can afford the gas on my stock WRX (which is about $80) a week, but jesus im going to putting out 120+ a week for this baby. Is there anything i can do to make it more economic... IE... change out the injectors & turbo for say... an Sti inj and turbo safely? Keeping in mind.. I HAVE NO MECHANICAL EXPERIANCE i would need some help...

What do you guys think?
Andrew

IMO I would NEVER buy a car w/ mods, ESP. like whats listed above....your prolly buying someone else's problems.

Once something goes wrong/blows up...FUN FUN FUN to fix it out of your pocket.

**Find out why it's being sold..maybe its too good to be "true"**
** Find out who did the work**
** Keep in mind he is still running stock tranny w/ those mods as well**

good luck

I would never buy a heavily modified car. You don't know if the modifications that were done caused any extra wear and tear on the car; were the mods installed correctly? Since you mentioned it has a stock wrx transmission and the car is putting out 300+ bhp...that alone would make me not walk, but run away from this car.

Get a used STi and you will thank yourself.

it isn't that bad owning more than one car.. I got a cheap honda and adding liability was only another $30/month or something. and it gets over 30MPG.
I suggest that as your daily beater, makes it easier to save up for money to spend on the nice car.

plus you have something to drive when it's down for wrenching.

I think you should get a stock one so you know that there is less of a problem.

Honestly if you dont have some money to fix what might be done wrong or what might break I'd probaly pass on that car. The stock tranny alone could very well put you several thousand (3-7k) in debt right after you buy the car.

Food for thought...I'd pass.

well I have 650cc injectors and get up to 25mpg mixed city/ highways daily driving, so he probably drives it HARD to get that low MPGs. Of course I did average about 7mpg at my last road course track day.

Half the fun of owning a Subie is doing the mods yourself and growing with the car, youll miss out on all that

Just curious... what will be involved if i were to swap out the inj for STi pink, and/or swap out the turbo for an STi setup? Would it make any diff. in MPG?? I guess i would prolly need a re-tune since the current setup is so rich. I have absolutely no mechanical skills... (with engines). Maybe someone here will want to swap out their injectors and turbo for this setup???

I would not a buy a car with anything more than simple bolt-ons (i.e. catback, swaybars, etc.)

Funny thing is is that the car I bought had simple bolt-ons plus a lightweight flywheel and a act street clutch both of which I could do without.

Well, assuming you trust your friend and know the history of the car, I'd still say it's not a good deal. It doesn't sound like what you are looking for. I gather you want a fun daily driver that's reliable and reasonable on gas. The stock one fits that description much better. It's not like you'll make money on the resale trying to sell such a highly modded car, especially if it's not a regular title. Those parts don't increase the car's value on the market, and they're not in line with what you want on your car... I'd pass based on those criterion before even opening up the Pandora's box of what-ifs concerning reliability.

I agree with the other posters. Don't buy it! You wanted something more gas efficient, and this is definitely not it.

Take it from someone who has gotten a already modded car before... DONT DO IT! Unless its the bare bone basic boltons you never know how badly tuned it was at somepoint or how beat on it was. Your much better off finding a stock or nearly stock car. The less mods the better. Also take it to a dealer let them give it a once over and check on everything before u actually buy it. Its worth the $200 bucks rather than $14k wasted.

Anyone that has a modded car knows that you keep your stock parts. why? because when you sell your car you put it all back to stock (because its worth more to 90% if the population) and take your mods and sell them. run like a cheetah on crack away from this car, youll regret buying it.
dont get me wrong, im sure its a nice vehicle, but if you are in a situation where this needs to be a reliable car and youre looking for a wrx, find a stocker and raise it like a little baby.
