Question What should I look for when I want to buy a Suby in AK

Ok, to provide the nutshell, I'm going to look at an 03 WRX tomorrow from a gentlemen. It's got about 40k miles, 5-speed, completely stock inside and out, 3-4 tiny dings in a door, and he's the original owner. I'm really excited about seeing it, but when he advertised it, he quoted it about 8k over it's value. I'm thinking for a a WRX w/ 40k miles, I want to pay about 12-13 for it total, but I'm unsure cause I've never purchased a car other than my own. He's really nice and easy to work with.

Does anyone have some good ideas for sales points on the car. I want to recommend it run through a total inspection from Subaru which usually runs around $200? But I don't want him to cover it since if it shows something wrong, than I can use that as a perk, but if not, that makes the car that much better. Anyone have some advice that they can help out with the purchasing of it? I'm hoping to pick it up around Wednesday.

Anyone who can help out I greatly appreciate it.

make sure the turbo heatshield is on there, if its not chances are its been modded, most people are too lazy to put the old one back on. (nothing wrong with buying a previously modded car though, i think its a safe bet that the vast majority of wrx's up here have been modded) and definitely worth the $200 to have a mechanic look a it, especially on a car like the wrx

That's exactly what my friend said. He told me it's only worth it if you're 100% commited to buy it, but at the same time it's very in depth. Another wonderful thing I want to experience from a Subaru.

12K for an unmodded 03 WRX in excellent shape with 40K miles would be a great deal, IMO. Having the Conti guys check it out for you would be money well spent, if you don't spot any obvious problems.

Some quick things to look at would be: turbo heat shield as was already mentioned. You could also jack it up, take off the plastic belly pan (if it is still there, that is another indicator that it hasn't been modded), and check the up pipe, the stock one has bulky heat shields on it, aftermarket ones are just bare pipes. Check for grinding when shifting into 1st gear when moving, also be sensitive to grinding in higher gears, grinding can indicate synchro problems which are fairly common.

There are lots of other things you could look at including injector brackets, intercooler hoses and clamps, ...., but describing what to look for would take a while. Good luck.

This wasn't the topic I originally started. How dare a moderator change my topic statement...

Kidding.

I checked those points ( The heatshield over the turbo, the plastic undercarrage shield ) and everything is perfectly in tact. I got a quote from Progressive on my insurance and they amazed me with the rates. I'm excited because I think this is going to work out here in the next few days. If so I owe a great amount of thanks to NASIOC here. So I'll keep everyone updated on the progress.

Default here are a few pics i took

make sure what I'm pointing at is there, thats the turbo heatshield, mine is nice and shiny since I sanded and polished it

directly behind it is the down pipe, mine is aftermarket so its nice and shiny too, this is a pic of the stock one (shameless plug those studded tires in the background are for sale!)

make sure what i'm pointing at is there, its a big piece of metal, if its gone then it means someone at some time upgraded the injectors

here's what the driver's side looks like

i was too lazy to install the driver's side one on my car so it looks like this...if the car you're about to buy looks like this run ...you shouldn't be able to see the fuel rail like that

make sure the bypass valve is the stock one (what i'm pointing at is the stock bypass valve)...the blue hoses should be black rubber
