Quote:
OXON HILL, Md. -- An 18-year-old girl was killed by a lightning strike Wednesday as she stood at a bus stop in Oxon Hill, Md., officials said.

The incident happened at a bus stop on Kennebec Street about 2:30 p.m.

Nearby Pepco workers told authorities the girl, who has yet to be identified, sought refuge under a tree when it began to rain. The tree was struck by lightning, the workers told police, and the girl was immediately knocked to the ground.

The Pepco workers rushed to the girl and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. She was rushed to Greater Southeast Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities said they had trouble contacting the girl's family because the lightning erased all of the data on her cell phone.

When I was a kid, there were some workers on our street repaving a section that had been dug up to fix a water line. When it came up a storm, they did the same thing... went and got under a big oak tree in our yard. I saw them out the window and told my grandmother about it. She went out and yelled at them.. told them to get out from under the tree, and made them come down in our carport. About 5 minutes later, that tree got struck by lightning. You should have seen the looks on their faces when they realized they would have been standing there.

Lightning and trees should be common sense, but I guess some people just don't realize.

Reasonable to escape the rain, but trees being lightning rods is kind of common knowledge... for some.

Or was the pun not good enough by OT standards?
