Angry The A-holes in Olympia have been busy

New Driving Fines

1. Carpool lane - 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/07 (The $271 posted on the highway is old). Don't do it again because 2nd time is going to be double. 3rd time triple, and 4th time license suspended.

2. Incorrect lane change - $380. Don't cross the lane on solid lines or intersections.

3. Block intersection - $485

4. Driving on the shoulder - $450

5. Cell phone use in the construction zone - Double fine as of 07/01/07. Cell phone use must be "hands free"while driving.

6. Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts - both passengers and drivers get tickets .

7. Speeders can only drive 3 miles above the limit or risk being ticketed.

8. DUI = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)

9. As of 07/01/07 cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving. Ticket is $285. They will be looking for this like crazy - easy money for police department.

Did anyone else hear about any of this? No? What a surprise! They have sprung a new crop of crap on us, and I guess they must have forgotten to tell anyone. Shhhhhhhhhhhhh. Lets keep this hush-hush. That way we can generate a whole bunch of revenue in the 3rd quarter.

I know, the cell phone thing was on the news. But 3 MPH over the limit? And the carpool lane fine - OMGWTF? Can you say GREEEEEEEEED?

Who comes up with this stuff, and how does it make it into the RCW? Somebody needs to be stripped to the waist and beaten for this! What a pisser, to think that we are paying hard-earned $$$ to a bunch of idiots so they can dump on us like this. Bagga Douches.

Rather than the smiley, this is where we talk about writing our state legislature to rescind some of these silly revenue-generating traffic laws.

Don't break the law and none of these will affect you.

Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 don't concern me in the least.

Actually, I'm glad about 8.

But, 5, 7, and 9 = We should be forced to take an annual/bi-annual dexterity and concentration test where if we pass with flying colors, we can talk on our phones, if we pass with marginal colors we can keep our license, and if we fail we lose our license for a year or until we can pass.

Fines for driving without insurance or without a license should be in the $1000+ range, with cars impounded and sold at auction for unpaid fines. And I'm not talking about driving without PROOF of insurance or a license in hand, I'm talking about not actually having it. Proof of insurance doesn't mean **** - anyone with access to a computer can make their own insurance card. In an accident/citation, officers should be able to call an 800# to confirm that the insurance is valid and paid to date. If not, impound and the vehicle is given to the victim to pay for damages.

Shoulda known. It came to me via email from a buddy's wife. Thing is, a lot of it sounds viable and relevant to recent newscasts.

Sorry for the interruption - carry on.

(Although I can guaran-damn-tee there's somebody in Olympia that still needs to be stripped and beaten!

Even though this is mostly a hoax, here's my thoughts:

Quote:
New Driving Fines

1. Carpool lane - 1st time $1068.50 starting 7/1/07 (The $271 posted on the highway is old). Don't do it again because 2nd time is going to be double. 3rd time triple, and 4th time license suspended.
- Good. Don't drive in the carpool lane if you don't have enough people. How hard is this to understand? Oh yeah, and don't be a d-bag and use it as a passing lane either.

Quote:
2. Incorrect lane change - $380. Don't cross the lane on solid lines or intersections.
- Good. Why do you need to anyway?

Quote:
3. Block intersection - $485
- Awesome. You are no more important than the people trying to go the other way. Yes, I know you are trying to get to Target to scope out the underage hotties, but there's no reason to block the intersection so the other direction can't go.

Quote:
4. Driving on the shoulder - $450
- Awesome. There's no reason to be on the shoulder unless it's legally specified you can (and are a trucker) or you are broken down.

Quote:
5. Cell phone use in the construction zone - Double fine as of 07/01/07. Cell phone use must be "hands free"while driving.
- This is soon to be a law anyway, as of 7/08.

Quote:
6. Passengers over 18 not in their seatbelts - both passengers and drivers get tickets .
- Good. There's no reason not to wear a seatbelt, and if you're dumb enough to let your passengers not wear one you should be penalized.

Quote:
7. Speeders can only drive 3 miles above the limit or risk being ticketed.
- You will never see such a specific law. The law is 60 or 70 maximum. Most police officers and WASPs will allow a 5-10mph variance, but there's never anything "official" about it, and it highly depends on the mood of the officer.

Quote:
8. DUI = JAIL (Stays on your driving record for 10 years!)
- Good. Don't drink and drive. How hard is that to understand?

Quote:
9. As of 07/01/07 cell phone use must be "hands free" while driving. Ticket is $285. They will be looking for this like crazy - easy money for police department.
- This will be a law in this state on 7/08 anyway so who cares? Pay attention to driving, idiot.

- Patrick

I'm definatley with Nick on this one. I have nothing wrong with any of these. I hate when people do some of these things!

The cell phone one, not so sure. I typically won't answer or make a phone call while I'm driving just cause I do agree that its unsafe, even for a young focused whipper-snapper like me, but at the same time... rarely I might call someone for like 2 seconds while driving, its a little lame I can't do that. But, I'm happy to make the sacrafice, since I see probably 3 near-accidents a day involving people either putting makeup on, or talking on their phone.

I'm not actually a fan of the Cell phone ban. Though its some consolation that its a secondary enforcement. While I understand that cell phones are distracting and there are probably studies that show it leads to more accidents. I don't doubt it a bit. The part I have a problem with is that it only addresses cell phone users. What about eating? Women (or some men, i suppose) putting on makeup? Reading? Fumbling for CDs? Talking to other people in the car? Lighting a cigarette? Drinking a coffee? The point is that there are quite a few things that are distracting. I like the description of Utah’s laws taken from the iihs.org link above that defines it as careless driving while distracted by the use of a cell phone or other activities not related to driving.

I say don’t just issue citations for people using cell phones, do it for all the other people that aren’t paying attention to their driving.

Yes, all those other activities can be distracting, but nothing beats carrying on a conversation with someone who's not actually in the car. . . . it puts your mind in a very different place, very dangerous.

+180.. whoops.. CrUNcH!

In depth conversation is the most distracting thing by far.

(Well actually, little kiddies are probably right up there too but I don't think we could get away with banning snot-nosed brats or overly coddling parents from our roads )

i think reading is pretty scary though not as common. Not only is your mind focused on something else, but so are your eyes. I've actually seen it around Issaquah more than anywhere else. Obviously not as much as cell phone use.
