Default button on automatic shifter wont engage to move out of drive

I am driving a 93 impreza wagon with an automatic transmission. Once and a while, I will start the car, and put my foot on the brake to shift outof drive. when I go to press the button on the shifter with my thumb to put it into drive or reverse, the button wont push in, so i cant get the car out of park. I will play with the button and wiggle the shifter, turn the car on and off a few times, pump the break peddle, and nothin, then eventually it will just press in, and shift gears.

And when I am driving the car drives and shifts gears fine on its own. But the button wont engage sometimes on the shifter. Anyone know what would cause this or how to fix it.

It happened at the gas station recently and I was sitting at the pump forever playing with the shifter untill the button randomly pushed in and i could shift gears.

thanks

i think its called the shift interlock system. I dont have an owners manual with the car. Is there a way to bypass the shift interlock so you dont have to push the button to shift gears?

That's exactly what it is. You can remove the center trim from the car enough to get to the micro-switch that activates the interlock. If in fact you move the switch and everything works, then you know that the shifter assy. itself is the problem.
The last vehicle I looked had a similar issue, they could not remove their key from the switch. Turns out the little tab on the shifter assy., was bent and would not activate the switch.
Check and see if the tab, looks more like a straight pin, is bent.
