Unhappy exhaust noise and the law

Does anyone know how I can go about finding out the exact word of the law regarding exhausts and noise in the state of NH?

Got pulled over tonight and the local cop wasn`t too happy with my MKIII.

He told me I had to tone it down or get rid of it.
Just trying to figure out what my options are.

Al any insight you might have would be cool also.

Thanks for the help,

Bill

Thanks for the help,

Bill
Two words: Bill Harvey

I know he went away for Christmas...not sure when he will be back. I know they've discussed this in the NE board, and NH has some of the strictest rules and goes somewhere along the lines of...you can't modify anything on your car. Unfortunately, I think that the local cop is right. I bet you wished that silencer did a better job right about now, eh?

Check you local gov website for the law. Here in WA it's 95db and in Cali I believe it's 92db(or 93db?). That should be clearly written in the law books.

Which state are you in ? I'll look up the MV law for you

Do you have the silencer in??? I had to put mine in now that I have a baby and it aint too bad!

If all else fails - get a extra TT rear section

Thanks everyone.

I`ll talk to Bill when he gets back.

Al I live in New Hampshire.
I found that the silencer is made of black iron whichs rusts like crazy. So mine is a mess an looks like crap. I didn`t find it really made much of a difference anyways.

The cop pulled me over when I was doing like 10 miles an hour so there wasn`t anything I could do about the noise. Usually if I see a cop I try to coast by.

*edit added*
well just found this on NH web site:
Quote:
266:59 Muffler; Prevention of Noise. I. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler as defined in RSA 259:66, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a way.
II. The engine and power mechanism of every motor vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes, smoke, flame, gas, oil or fuel residue.

III. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in any manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted above that emitted by the original muffler installed in the vehicle and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this section.
So I guess that answers my question.
Anyone have a TT section they want to swap for a MKIII?

Bill

My catless MK3 is very loud. I got pulled over on Thursday evening however and the cop didn't even comment on it.

I do, and I haven't had any issues. Of course, the MK3 is waaay louder than the GT, and I think some towns in NH care more than others. Goffstown doesn't seem to care too much.

MY MKIII is much louder the a GT.

I think this was just a particluar cop that was feeling lonely. I`ve had other cars that were loud and never had a problem.

Actually the GT with a baffel is equal to the stock level. Without it has a nice deeper then stock note. The TT is alittle louder then the GT without a silencer.

These are all just my opinioins though

I don`t think you would have too much trouble with either of those. Unless you live in a really strict enforcement area.
Or just a a local cop out for you. (like me)

Default BPM GT installed - 2 days later....

Well I got the BPM GT installed ( it is awesome the car feels nicely different) and the first day I drove around with the silencer in - and it was not that loud, a little louder then stock but a much nicer, meaner tone. The second day I took the silender off and drove around all day, passed three cops and nothing. That night I was at WOT and passed a cop. He pulled me over, I played dumb and he said that you are not allowed to change the exhaust on a car to make it louder. I played naieve (sp?) and said I had a silencer thing to make it quieter. He let me go with a written warning, I asked him if I should put the silencer in and he said - eh if you want. So looks like the silencer will stay in unless I leave NH or just feel like hearing a little noise ?

What is the states version of 'modify'? Most times, 'modify' means 'to alter'. You did NOT alter the stock system, you REPLACED it. Modify and replace means two separate things in almost all law books. .... Alfried? You could probably comment on this one...

It's like taking a screwdriver to the stock cat, or to the stock muffler system, or even cutting a hole in the pipes of the stock system, that's a no-can-do.

(can you see I'm ready for this fight with my local constables?) They need a system of measurement if they are going to enforce it. Any dB readings taken?

What's the definition of obscenity? "I know it when I see it"
Then.... What's the definition of louder than stock? It's something that has to be proved.

I heard also that in MA they passed a law that you cannot have anything loader than stock? (Same as in NH?)

I was hanging around the North Eastern forum since my wife is a New Englander and dying to move back there. Since that may happen within the next year and half and I have several mods and was wondering how hard would be to register the car in MA.

Cheers

Having owned a DSM I found this link for us CA owners...

http://www.vfaq.com

Look for the Exhaust link and at the top of that page you will see a link for the CHP Exhaust Noise Ordinance.

I don't think it's a new law. I think it's always been like that. They want to pass a law so that you cannot replace your stock exhaust system with an aftermarket one. Registering your car in MA is easy...it's passing the inspection that's hard! At least they can't put our cars on the dyno like they do to the other cars. It all depends where you go to have your inspection done. The place I go to is really laid back. I sit in my car and go through all the visual inspections (ie. wipers, blinkers, etc.), where I've heard other places take your car inside without you. Also, the place I go to didn't give me the sniffer test...even on my 95 OBS.

well yes to register the car you have to get the sticker from the inspection station. wow they did not give you the sniffer test...

Do you have to do it every year right? Did anyone with an aftermarket exchaust had to go through that?

cheers

T.

PS: I think we are getting a bit OT here?
