Post illegal to remove cats in alberta?

i was talking to a muffler shop today about different exaust systems and mufflers. the guy there siad that the most gain would be to remove the rear car on my car. i was like "ummmmm isn't that illegal" the guy siad it was only illegal in BC or something like that. is he just giving me a load of BS or is it actually true?

It's true Roland! But, personally unless you're going all out for power, removing the cat will only give you ~ 5hp or so. Keep our environment healthy! [ I must sound like some treehugger now! ]

But if you plan to live in BC or Ont or down in Cali later, when you go for inspection, you'll be screwed over (if they are very observant)

You won't see much benefit from removing the cats unless you're going turbo or all-motor (ie 200+hp) But at that point, I'd suggest a Random Tech. high-flow cat.

You won't notice much of a gain, if any, on a normally aspirated car by removing the cats because the cat is no longer the biggest restriction in the exhaust system. Car makers have figured out how to make good power with the cats in, and their removal can sometimes have a detrimental effect. Modern cats flow extremely well, and removing them is just a waste of time. Now on a big horsepower turbo car, its another matter entirely.

i might try it once and put it back on since i have access to a lift. don't tell me you guys aren't tempted at all to do it just once to see what gains you get. plus its not like its illegal to remove the cat yet. i know its not good for the environment but still i'm tempted.

CE light, and emissions... I mean, there are after all two cats right?!?!

Well, theres nothing really stopping you, but if you are expecting really big gains, you aren't going to find them there. Now taking the cat off a WRX and putting on a straight through, you are going to see some power, but not an NA 2.5RS.
