Subaru of America, Inc. Records Best Year in History; 2001 Total Sales Up 8%;
Best December Total Sales Since 1985; Impreza Establishes New Sales Record

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA), a
pioneer of crossover all-wheel drive vehicles designed for the active
lifestyle, announced today its best total sales result on record, posting a
year-end total of 185,944 units. The previous record of 183,242 units was
established in 1986. The final 2001 tally represents an 8% increase from
2000 totals for the comparable period.

"Our year-end result is a remarkable milestone for the Subaru brand and a
shining example of the Beauty of All-Wheel Drive," said Subaru Executive Vice
President, Fred Adcock. "Most importantly, we achieved our success by
remaining true to our core philosophy of offering 100% all-wheel drive
vehicles designed to complement the active lifestyle. Everyone at SOA and
our retail partners should be very proud of this tremendous achievement."

Subaru Legacy led the 2001 totals with 95,291 units posted. Subaru Outback
accounted for 70,625 units, outpacing last year's total of 68,902 for the
same period. Subaru Impreza established a new sales record of 35,612 total
units, up a remarkable 85% from the previous year. Impreza sales were
bolstered by the successful launch of the rally-bred 2002 Impreza WRX,
accounting for 18,060 unit sales since its March introduction. Subaru
Forester recorded a total of 55,041 total unit sales.

Subaru recorded a sales total of 15,926 units for the month of December, an
increase of 8% from 2000 figures for the same period. Subaru Legacy led the
volume for the month with 8,005 units, while Subaru Outback accounted for
5,958 units. Subaru Forester recorded sales of 4,569 units in December, up
2%. Subaru Impreza continued its remarkable sales success with sales of
3,352 units, up 128% from December 2000.

That is very interesting, thanks for the post. Over 18,000 WRX sales. I hope this will convince Subaru to bring more performance models to the U.S.

Interesting, but not suprising. 18,000 WRXs already running around huh? 35,000 Imprezas total just this year? Right on!

Interesting. The market must be a lot different here than in the rest of the country. I see 20-30 Foresters per day, and maybe 2 or 3 Imprezas per WEEK. WRX's, maybe one per month.

Question Where are the WRX's?

Gracias,
Very informative article. It seems that building quality vehicles (and hiring Paul Hogan to advertise them) is paying off. IMHO, Subaru owners are pretty loyal and often replace one Subie with another. I do have to agree with bryanw, here in the Midwest, I see lots of Outbacks and Foresters but very few Impreza's and almost never see another WRX. So where are all of the WRX's?

There are lots of WRX's here in Silicon Valley. A month ago I hardly saw any now I see two to three a day.

I think you all read that slightly wrong. Thats 18,000 Imprezas, of which a signifigant portion are WRX's.

The way I read it 35,612 total Imprezas sold of which 18,060 were WRX's. Am I missing something?

I would be willing to bet that WRX's account for an even larger percent of Impreza sales this year.

Colorado Springs has about 25-30 WRXs rollin' around -- they're everywhere!! There are SO many Subarus here. Outbacks and Imprezas are everywhere as well. Go 50 miles north to Denver and x those numbers by about 10!!

Good article thanks for the post. Most likely you will see that Subaru will break 2002's sales figures as well. Cars have been flying out of the showroom's and with the amount of exposure the car's are getting these days is only going to add fuel to the fire.

Anyone else thinking there's going to be a buttload of used Honda's Acura's and Eclipse's being traded in at Subaru dealers soon? Me think so
