Question Grinding gear while shifting into 5th--going 70-75 mph

As stated in the topic line:

When I shift from 4th to 5th going faster than 70-75mph...it will grind while going in. I don't shift any differently than all the other gears and the clutch pedal can't be pushed down any further.
Less than 70-75 mph, it goes in smoothly!! For it not to grind at over 70-75mph, I have to step on clutch pedal and wait 6-7 sec...then it will go in 5th smoothly.

Any words of advice before I bring it to the dealer?? Thanks!

PS: If this has been posted before, please re-direct me! Thanks!

Well as its only stated as doing it in these gears I would say that maybe the problem is the syncros in the gearing. In which case it MAYBE covered with warranty. In anycase let your subaru dealer know.

Brought the car to the dealer this morning and we took it for a run.

They said that there is something wrong with the tranny but they can't do anything until the local rep takes it for a drive. They told me that they are not able to take that decision to fix it!! Is this true?

Are they trying to brush me off or is this normal procedure? Or do they think I screwed up the 5th gear and that's why they are going to the rep?

They also told me that whenever the rep would be in that they would give me call. The "Whenever" comment did not go over to well with me but that I dealt with quite easily!

Ok Guys, here is an update to my situation.

The rep finally took it for a drive and he felt the 5th grinding in for himself. He was somewhat suprised that this was happening!! But he did say that there was quite a few claims for the 1st and 2nd and he said the only cause for that was racing. (Yeah yeah yeah)

I asked if the grinding was because of a weak tranny! He said no (obviously). But honestly if the 5th gear is going (I did not abuse it or how the hell would you abuse a 5th gear?!?!), it's not a wonder there are a lot of issues with the 1st and 2nd.

And what is really sad....If you are not abusing your car and you are having problems with the 1st and/or 2nd gear, the dealer, rep and SOA "ARE" going to give you a hard time.

In my case, the 1st gear could have screwed up and not the 5th........I guess that I'm lucky.

Anyway, they are going to open up my tranny in the next few weeks and do the work under warranty!!!! Actually...there has never been any word that it would not be covered or at the very least not in front of me.

But still having the rep check it out(and having to wait a full month ).....they must of had some doubts or maybe it's normal procedure!

As this is a hot topic, I'll let you guys know how my tranny work comes out.

Humm, I have been trying to figure out the exact circumstances required to replicate my daily 4th gear grind. I have noticed it only seems to happen at higher RPM's/speeds when shifting into 4th. This almost sounds like what you have been describing with your 5th gear.

Do you have any update to this situation? I'm taking my WRX in next week for the same problem: 4-5th grind at over 70mph, as when running up the gears onto a highway. Shifting at lower speeds is fine!

Thanks for any info or help.

Thanks for the reply, hearing that they are replacing the syncros and all. But what are they replacing them with? The same parts that become worn at 3-7K miles??? Did they tell you there has been an upgrade/change to the new syncros they are putting in, or was there a problem with a certain run of trannies? Is there a bulletin from SOA on this situation?

Any info is helpful, thanks.

Thumbs up Trans replaced

I had the synchro problem when shifting from 3rd into 4th. You can tell if it is a synchro by short shifting the gear. If you shift it fast and it does not grind, then it is a synchro. If you help it into the gear as with a normal shift and it grinds then, again, it is a synchro. If it does it no matter what, it could be a whole other problem. Short shifting does not give the gear time to decelerate on the transmission shaft and you will notice a normal shift. ANyway, they went ahead and replaced the transmission on my 02 WRX and I have not had any shift problems since, although I am still plagued with the 1st gear clutch chatter when the engine is cold.

Hey guys,

I did forget to update this thread......

About a month ago now they changed the 5th gear and the synchro under warranty and now it works great. We looked at the old peices and they were not damaged in any way....so the only reason that we came up with was the original peices must have been manufactured out of spec. (Just my opinion)

But what actually impressed me is that they completed the work in one day. They started at 8am and finished off at 6:30pm even if the mechanics usually finish working at 5pm. That really showed me determination!!!!

Just to mention,
I am another in the blown 5th gear syncro club...as someone posted above, how the heck can you abuse 5th?

Anyway, for reasons of my own, I traded it back to them for a Blue wagon.

What impressed me most: The wagon had only 8 mi on it
What impressed me the least: That athough they had no trouble commiting to repair under warranty, they did say they only covered 3 days rental car and they estimated 3 weeks to fix..

The car had 12k on it..

i just started experiencing the dredded 3rd to 4th shift. it only happens when i quick shift, and its only a really slight grind. when i grandma shift nothing, rides fine. went to local dealer and the conclusion they came up w/ was 4th gear synchro. so they ordered the part and when it comes in they open up the tranny. its going to be covered by waranty but i was told you only get one warranty job... so use it wisely. im just pissed cus i only have 9650 miles! but i cant lie, i beat the living **** out of this car.. and im suprised it would be a 4th gear synchro as opposed to a 2nd which would seem to me being the deadliest.

Damn! I thought I was the only one. If I'm going faster than ~75mph and shift into 5th it grinds EVERY TIME. I only have 15K miles and NEVER abused it. I mean, who races in 5th gear? You'd have to top out 4th gear (126mph) and then keep going. That'd be crazy.

Well, my 02 WRX is just pushing 7k miles, and I too am experiencing a grind from 4th to 5th, and sometimes have trouble shifting into reverse, and 1st gear whines when decelerating, which I'm not sure if it is normal or not. I haven't tried the 2nd to 1st shift above 5 mph, but I will tomorrow. My car is going to the dealer next Thursday.

I am and have been having the same problam! I only have 4,500miles on my car and going from 4'th to 5'th at higher speeds it grinds..not all the time though....so far I had to replace 2'nd gear and the main shaft in the transmission...I grinded down 2'nd but that was me and im taking responsability but this 5'th gear thing must be the synchros and I think it should also be a issue because I know of alot of people with synchro problams...but i still think the biggest tranny problam we have is the weak 2'nd gear and soa denying warrenty automaticly...over 5k claims on 2'nd gear alone...I dont they all can ve from abuse..can they? this transmission sucks plain and simple and soa wont fess up to it.

who told you that subaru had 5 thousand claims for second gear out of over 18 thousand cars? I seriously doubt that. Other thing is other countries don't seem to have the volume of complaints with the gearbox in the wrx?
