Default Am I doing something wrong?

I don't know if I'm just retarded, but I have a couple questions when checking oil on our cars. At least on mine in particular.

Right now I'm almost 800 miles over the 3000 mile mark for an oil change. I checked the oil right at the 3000 mile mark and it was about a quart low. I added the quart and it seemed ok.

So I go and check it the other day before I head out to Girdwood. I pull the dip stick out, it shows over the full mark or right at the full mark. I stick it back in, and it comes out bone dry. I put it back in 3 more times, bone dry. Ran the car again, checked it later that night, it does the same thing. Does this mean I'm basically out of oil? Don't know how I could consume a quart in just 800 miles. It seems like I have the same problem everytime. I just don't want to over fill it with oil.

Let me know your suggestions.

Thanks,
Wes

For best results, you must check it when the car is cold. That way all the oil is in the pan. It takes about an hour for all the oil to drip down from the entire system.

It still shouldn't be bone dry none the less. Wes you did all the simple things like checking for basic leaks correct?

I know what you're talking about... when I first got my car I couldn't figure it out, got readings all ove the board.

Now I just check it when it is cold, I don't bother when it is warm.

That way I get the most consistant readings... and I don't risk running the car when low.

go from the second reading, which means yes it is low. it's common for the dipstick tube to trap some oil from driving and skew the first or second reading.

cold should be at the f mark, hot should be at the notch in the side of the dipstick above the f mark. i would be a much slower mechanic if i waited for every car to cool 1 hour...

Alright I'll add another quart or so. Damn car just eats up oil. There's no leaks, car still runs strong and the oil smells fine. There's always blow by, seems like that started more and more after I instsalled the alcohol injection, but that's been turned off for a long time now.

Thanks for all the help, at least now I know that I won't be adding too much oil

I am amazed at how much oil the engine holds after you just shut it down. It is nearly dry in there! Then you wait an hour (in worry) and check again and your at the full mark. Quite strange.
