Default Turbo down AGAIN OMFG

well i was crusing home this morning and heard a loud howling/whining coming from the engine bay.. weird because i was only in 2nd gear and accelerating to meet the speed limit. anyways the noise kicked in at about 23-2500 rpm. and at around 3600 the car jolted as it lost is power. i thought it was just a hose again but i'm pretty sure it's not. can drive the car if i keep it under those rpms. well i got home changed and went back to work and it wasn't making the noise.. so i'm like hrmm weird.. well i got back on base and bam the noise came back.. it i'll do it in 2-4th gear but not 1 or 5. it will also make the noise if in neutral or in gear with clutch all the way down and i rev it past about 3800rpm.. i'm figuring it's the turbo considering my boost is ridiculously low and kinda sounds like the turbine wheel is just freefloating so to speak. idk what do you guys think? i'm gonna drive the car until it blows up or i save enough money for the upgrades.. one of the two is gonna happen because i'm pist off at this stupid car. well would like to hear what you guys have to say about this.. Thanks

If it is gear dependent, then it sounds like a transmission issue.

A turbo doesn't care what gear you are in.

Need more info to give any useful comments. How much boost is it making? Is it really not giving any symptoms in 5th gear?

In the meantime, I would check for anything out of the ordinary around the turbo, such as leaks or disconnects in the boost control hoses. Pre-turbo exhaust or intercooler hose leaks can also cause unusual symptoms, as you mentioned.

Unusual noise from the turbo can definitely be bad news. Good luck.

-on the bright side, TD04's are cheap.

how many miles on the turbo?
put a manometer on the boost side and see wat its pushin!!
did the car do a hard jerk or was it like decelerating like you were in second?
and if it was makin noise in neutral its not the tranny.

I have the same problem....i think.

so each time you get on the throttle gears 1-4? and then 5 and 6 is alot softer sounding but you can still hear it? it starts making a screeching noise that you can hear over your exhaust?

best way to describe it sounds like an old fire trucks siren.... its only in the 2-4 gears that it makes the noise... boost is like at 8lbs ... and it made a hard jerk as i was accelerating when i got to about 3800 rpm... there's about 8k miles on the turbo and it has already had the seals replaced last month..it is a vf34

Sounds like a turbo rebuild gone bad. Check for shaft play, oil consumption.

Since I have zero experience troubleshooting turbo motors:

Why would a turbo only act up in certain gears?

Possibly because the ECU/boost control system loads the turbo differently in different gears. For example1st gear doesn't call for full boost. Can't explain why it wouldn't be working the turbo hard in 5th gear though...

that was my next thing check shaft end play and up and down movement and make sure that the turbin isnt hitting the housing. it probably not the turbine or it would came appart already. most likely its the bearings. my advice is dont drive it cause the turbo could come apart then your looking at possable engine failure.
is it still making noise when idle?

I had a similar problem when I had to get my entire setup replaced. The whining was cause my turbine wheel had become quite loose. Later found out the whole thing had to be replaced. bah!

another update.. i'm getting 0 boost.. my guage shows when i'm going froma dead stop.. acelerate and it will go from -1.0Kpa to 0Kpa...now the higher rpms i get it slowly goes back down to between -0.5Kpa - -1.0Kpa... now for some odd reason a buddy and i were looking around at it.. popped the hood i revved he says the noise is coming fromt he driver side of the engine bay so i had him hop in and rev it and surely is coming from that side... i was looking around looking around.. and the intercooler pipe that connects to the TB..pipe goes down to the pipe that connects to the intercooler itself...the coupling that holds them together is no longer clamped on both sides.. so considering the boost slowly goes down like a leak.. i'm assuming this is the culperate?? what do you guys think? Now it's not making the noise in idle or even when i take it slow through each gear. it's when i put some pressure on it that it will make the noise or try to accelerate to quickly. I'm hoping this clamp is the reason and it's an easy fix. as far as shaft play... I'm not that experienced in them could someone walk me through what to look for or even how to do it?

Boost leaks is an issue when clamps are loose. That is one problem. To check shaft play, you can either A: removed your downpipe and look at the turbo from be hind and fiddle with the wheel to see if there is play, or B: the hard way, remove the turbo compressor inlet tube under your intake manifold. (not fun).

definately gonna try and find the clamp for the FMIC-TB coupler and reattach that.. then i'll go from the back end of the turbo/Dp to check for play.. i hate messing with the inlet hose.. but very high hopes for the clamp =0

Yeah, good luck. And as I'm sure you know, running the engine hard at all with a downstream air leak will overspeed the turbine.

+1 on removing the downpipe to check the turbo bearings, it is much easier than the other way.

okay yet again another news update... did the clamp thing and it took care of the problem.. now.. idk if i'm just being paranoid and just never noticed this before but.. neutral idle.. rev to 6k and the boost goes from about .75Kpa to 0kpa.. and while normal driving conditions it sits at around the same .75Kpa.. now get down on it and jumps to just over 1.5Kpa and will hold.. no more slowly dropping down to -1.0Kpa from an accel either.. is that about the normal?

I don't think that is anything to worry about personally. Mine fluctuates in and out of gear when blipping or not blipping the throttle. You should never be able to achieve boost in nuetral though unless you have launch control.
