Default attention automakers. Sell kei cars in the US.

that's all. I want sone dammit. i posted this in another forum, wanted to share with OT. please don't bash my speeling and grammmmme, i am well aware i suck at typing.

Quote:
in general(used to live in japan). ive driven the fit, suzuki's alto and kei (with works package), subaru r2, a mitsu toppo, the little mazda(forgot the name), and various others. the cars I owned were r32gts-t,sil80, celica gt4.

OK for a daily commute i actually saw no difference in a 30minute drive to work in either. hell 35mph is 35mph i don't care what you are in. i'm 6'3'' and my gf's Kei Works some how managed more rear legroom then any of my coupes. shopping sometimes was a tad annoying if you had rear passengers as there is next to no room in the "trunk" of a kei car, especially with subs in it. 63hp, ok, yes a low number. but the cars weigh next to nothing. up to a 2hour commute, on the wangan, really didn't bother me in a kei car, depending on the traffic. 660cc of turbo goodness is more then enough to dart out in traffic without the "omg i'm gonna get run over" feel. I have seen these things destroyed on the side of the road, and the occupants walked away.

Seriously they are nice cars IMO, and there are several tuner versions for these little things. I've seen Suzuki alto's rape gtr's, hilarious to see in person, a 1300 hayabusa motor, or a TT setup does ungodly wonders to those things. I think it's BS to say there is no market for these things, hell it's the perfect starter car for a high school kid, and a joy in the city with limited paring availible. You would be amazed the tight spots these things get in and out of. My favorite kei cars are the Suzuki kei and alto(works), and the subie r2. I would snatch either of them up in a heartbeat if they were sold stateside. Oh yes and the saving s at the pump don't even need to be addressed.
I think "green" is all in the marketing, and any kei car can be marketed as such.People said the scions, fit, and element wouldn't sell also. now everyone eis scrambling to fit a car in the market. ok that's all, and now.... ill whore some pics

writing that just got me to thinking how fun those little things really are. me want

+1
I've always wanted a Kei cars for a DD but sadly none are available I would so get one as a DD since they are afforadable and tiny. The MX5 is probably the closest thing I can think of available here.

Hopefully automakers realize there is a market for these small cars and one of them brings it over and other automakers jump on the bandwagon.

I think they have a hard time getting them road legal over here because of their size. After all, this is the US, everything needs to be huge!

True. I was in my roommates MazdaSpeed MX5 [insert gay jokes] and we drove by an Expedition and I was like That thing was huge!!! If it was to T-bone the MX5 I'd be cut in half. They look even larger when you can see under the car

People in my area are driving SMART Cars so I think the small car idea is starting to begin.
They have a 4dr coming out soon also.

You might, but nobody else will. These things just would not sell well here, despite any feelings that you might have otherwise.

Some June sales numbers:
Chevy Aveo 5615
Scion xA 770
Scion xB 5257
Toyota Yaris 9155
Honda Fit 5613

Chevy Cobalt 17,180
Chevy Impala 35,819
Toyota Camry 46,630
Honda Accord 28,915
Honda Civic 36,512

We already have cars that are small, cheap, and get good gas mileage, and they aren't selling. Now you want them to bring over something smaller and weaker? The cost of introducing the new models here will be more than what they can make in revenue.

Yes, but how would the general public react to a small, economical, inexpensive, and cool car? The xA, Yaris, and Aveo are extremely ugly, the Versa and Fit, well, meh.

I do like, however, that the speedo ALMOST goes up to the speed limit.

404: coolness not found

And in the US, 0-62 in 32.1 seconds is unacceptable.

this seems to be the urban version of the Subaru Impreza, the BOON CrossFour (X4) from Daihatsu. We're starting to think that the people from Daihatsu don't like to cruise around the city, because this "little" urban car has been injected with a serious dose of steroids. So what do we get?

- 963cc turbocharged engine that develops a very cool 133bhp
- 5-speed manual gearbox (short gears)
- a very light total weight of 980kg
- 4WD with auto-locking diff at the front

You get all this for a very affordable price: less than 15000 EUR for the high-end model.

As you might have suspected, this X4 will be present at some rally events, and it might very well be the ideal vehicle for the Nihon Car & Bike team whenever we have to travel around in Japan.

The Swift is not a kei car, it's a subcompact. We've already had Swifts here (and their cousins...Geo Metro) and they tanked. Suzuki's similar-sized SX4 sells about 1000 units a month in the US.
