Ditto for me (except I got mine in October). I have decided to keep it stock through warranty, maybe go stage 1 later, and if it blows, I will repair and sell it.
I take more care shifting this car than ANY other car I have owned. I have never launched it, nor do I plan to. So I feel comfortable with it being around for a while.

I didn't even try it. It would have been a waste of time plus a couple friends work at the dealership so it wouldn't look good.

O hey Rob, I'm only getting LegacyGT 3/4 gears. He inspected everything and I guess first and second are fine! (exept the damage I did to 2nd on the main shaft when I blew 3rd or from driving home that night)

06 wrx wagon, stock (just prodrive axleback)...

not very hard on the car whatsoever, 7800 on the wagon, no issues so far.

i've grinded third 3x...because of lazy shifting.

has anyone with a stock one blown the tranny or are they all pretty much stage II?

When I have a PPG tranny to put in, I'll really mash on it and see how strong our stock 1/2 gears are. You've seen me race, I leave some rubber on the road, so they're pretty strong obviously.

forgot to add when i ran a 12.7 i had fkin heavy ass rota 18's on... wheels alone are 22lbs plus a 21lb tire... my hp is just under 300... so with that much stress i'm thinkin my tranny might hold more with smaller wheels when i go to the track

06 WRX stage II since about 8,000 miles and now have 14,000 on the car. I don't launch the car or hit gears TOO hard and have no problems at all. I believe it's all on how you release the clutch and apply the gas.

I'm getting a pro-tune in a few weeks and I'm not worried about the extra power at all!!

Its not really HP that kills these cars it the combination of TQ, the transfer of TQ and how you drive the car. If you drive like a crazy person grinding gears, side stepping the clutch, shocking the drivetrain. things will stress, flex and/or break

2006 WRX Stage 1 12k. Was formerly Stage 2 for a few months. Nothing broken yet.

I'm pretty rough on 1st and 2nd due to city driving, and mainly due to the gear ratios... but if third goes, there is no doubt the transmission is flawed. I never do any spirited driving in third.

For now, it's holding up.

2006 wrx went to stage 2 at 4000 and vf39 protune at 8000 and now just hit 29000.

no probs or nioses from tranny, just smoked one clutch at 17000 already, might be since I probly shift slow and slip more than needed. never get on it to hard until in gear. only get 240ish miles per tank, so I drive heavy footed

06 wrx at stage 2(pro-tuned) since about 20,000 now at 34,000. Put in cocktail mix at 30,000. Even before i went stage 1, I have had this problem with 2nd gear. When in 2nd gear at around 2000rpms i get a somewhat load grinding noise and still have it today. recently when i am in 3rd gear and i get on it ill shift maybe around 4,500-5,000 rpm into 4th gear, but it wont go in. I have to force it in. This car is my DD and i baby just about 80% of the time. I drive on average 75 miles a day, 95% freeway miles. Sometimes i wish they would break just to give myself an excuse to buy stronger gears because i plan on buying at least an 18g setup sometime in the future. But i am glad not much else has happened as anything dealing with the transmission rips apart your wallet.

2007 WRX Limited with about 8,000 miles and some basic bolt-ons. I've been at Stage 1 for about 500 miles now putting down 216 hp and 260 ft-lb torque...spirted driving, but nothing too crazy...so far so good.

Knock on wood...

This is what Andrewtech Automotive has to say on the subject. I was thinking about doing the vf39 upgrade but not now. I would say they are pretty much the experts on subie transmissions.

Quote:
Rob,

Despite popular belief, the 06 transmissions are not weaker, the increased displacement just makes them more prone to breaking then earlier years. Torque breaks transmissions, not horsepower. That is exactly what makes the 06's so dramatically different then the earlier model cars in terms of transmission reliability. The transmission WILL break with a vf39, hit it in third gear, shift to hard into 3rd gear, bang 2nd gear, and it will more then likely break. I know it sucks buying a new car and not being able to do anything to it because of the weak ass transmission, but it is what it is. Now the question is how you go about solving the problem.
Unfortunately there is no solution for just 1-3 as the 3-4 gear is a cluster gear that is one piece so you have to do a 1-2 or a 1-4. The going rate for a 1-4 just for parts is $4050. The install and build will bring you to $4750 plus shipping, unless of course you drive the transmission down here and pick it up.
Think it over and let me know!

-Edwin

Is that news to you?

The final drive makes it worse, too, but the rest of that is old news. Sorry we had to break it to you.

Well, I didn't think that it was so weak that it couldn't even handle the vf39. I really thought it would hold that power...

How many 06/07 WRX that are stock or stage 1 have 3rd gear problems?

It's hard to tell, but it sounds like everyone who has 3rd gear problems are on stage 2 or something.

Engine/drivetrain-wise, I'm still stock. Probably go COBB stage 1. I'm in 3rd a lot at the track so this "issue" concerns me. I try very hard to be a smooth shifter and rev match etc. I'm hoping my stock-ness will save me from a 3rd gear problem people are talking about here.
