Default Tail light wire harness compatibility

I have an '06 WRX and recently bought a pair of '04 tail lights. Will I need to buy an 04-05 tail light wire harness, or can I use my '06 harness? bc it doesn't look like the reverse light socket will fit.

TIA

it will fit, you will just be missing a bulb. the 06 wrx only has 4 sockets, to the 04/05's 5. they will fit, for mine i left the middle lower one out of the assembly. at night it looks pretty slick actually. see how it looks first before you buy a harness.

Ya, I can do without the middle lower light, but the reverse socket doesn't match up to the hole correctly.

I just called the parts guy at my dealership, he's been around a long time. I asked him if 05 tail lights will fit in my07. He said everything is exactly the same, same harness, same amount of bulbs, you don't need to buy a harness.

I just bought 05's for my07 so I hope he is right.

I would call the dealership yourself just to make sure.

The part numbers of the wire harnesses are different for the 04-05 vs. 06-07. I bought the older wire harnesses for $20 a piece from the dealer.

Interesting, did you try and use the original one first? I guess my parts guy or your parts guy is wrong.

My '06 harness won't fit. The reverse light socket doesn't fit and it only has 4 bulbs instead of 5.

Your parts guy is wrong. I've looked up the part numbers on http://subarugenuineparts.com/ and they're different.

So how do we make this 05 tail light in an 06-07 WRX work? Did you guys ever get this figured out? Is it as simple as an adapter or is there rewiring involved? I'm thinking about 05 tail ever since I saw them in a car like mine!

before i traded MY05 in for MY07, I did this swap. I traded my 05 tails for a set of 06s. the harness plugs are the same, but where the bulbs go into the assembly is different. even so, just swapping the harnesses and assembly(bulbs too) you'll fit it fine. oh yeah and the bulbs that fit the 04-05 are 7440s where as the 06-07 are 7430s(or whatever the next size down was) that is why they have different part #s. The point is you can use whichever harness you want so long as you put the bulbs in the correct socket.

How much did you get the o4 taillights for? I really want to get a set for mine!

PSS: If anyone wants to trade their 04/05 taillights for my 06s plus this B&M sport shifter for a 03/07 WRX i'll be your bestfriend for ever!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you say "harness" I believe you mean the bulb sockets with the plug that are on the taillamp and not the actual wiring harness attached to the body of the car that goes to each taillamp.

New taillamps from the factory already come with the bulb sockets, with bulbs, already installed, which would mean that for the most part the swap is a plug-and-play, but...

...since you are going between model years, you have to "rewire" them. Meaning, you have to test the wires and reconfigure the terminals into the plug end (lamp-side) so that you can have the lamps work the way you want to.

The 06-07 lamps are a 4-socket set-up and the 04-05 are a 5-lamp set-up. With the latter, you have the flexibility of setting up each of the three lower lamps the way you want to. You can make the inners your parking lamp only, as with the WRC car. The centers are [apparently] the european/non-US rear fog lamps. The outers can be set as either your brake lamps only or a combination of parking/brake lamp. You decide.

This sounds like you've purchased a set of lamps used where the seller removed the sockets and thus you end-up trying to install your sockets onto lamps from a different model year, of course.

the difference in the 2 part #s is the bulb size they take, the 04/05 take the 7440 and the 06/07 take the 7439. Everything else is direct swap. there is no extra parts needed.

if you have 2 lights that need it then you'd need 2....unless i'm not understanding your question. anything i've ever got from a dealer, each part # was for 1(even bolts)
