Default blue smoke out of tail pipe after car sits for 48+ hours.

Noticed this twice now. If my WRX has sat for around 2 days or so there is a good bit of blue smoke that comes out of the tail pipe upon start up. It doesn't last long usually just one big puff when I first drive off, and then no more. Aside from that, I am buring about 1 quart between oil changes ( every 3000 miles)

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Turbo is probably leaking a small amount of oil into the exhaust when it is sitting. Considering how old your car is, it could be normal but I am not sure how many miles you've got.

try a thicker weight oil like 10/30 or 5/40 if your burning oil.. and maybe change brands see if that helps. what are you running now?

the blue smoke thing could be the turbo or the engine. and if you have high mileage its kinda normal i guess. ive seen it happen with my old stock engine plenty of times. but i did blow my turbo so it could have been the turbo.. sometimes they work for a long time before they actually break or give you issues but will leak alittle oil or coolent for who knows how long. mine lasted months like that with weekends at the drag strip! if i drove just to get around it probably would have lasted longer

when your car sits fpr prolong periods, 2 days.
the oil left in the cylinder pools at the bottom.
at start up the oil is burned...

1 quart every 3k is not to bad, just keep an
eye on your dip stick..of course if you drive hard
the more you consume..my 02 would take about
1/2 quart every 3k~4k

There are 84k miles on the engine. I am running 10w40 Mobil 1, I am looking for a new oil...probably end up with motul 8100.

I was pretty sure that it wasn't anything to worry about, and I was actually wrong about amount that I said it it is burning, I actually only put in a 1/2 quart every 3k...so it sounds like things are normal.

Thank you for the responses.

Maybe "beginning to wear out" piston rings or valve seals.
That would result in more oil then normal entering the cilinder, and burning off when u first start the car.
An engine in perfect condition won't do this, because the oil film normally present on the cilinder walls is so thin, that when that's burning up won't lead to excessive blue smoke.

It isn't a big thing, tho.
Just keep an eye on the oil level.

If you switch away from the Mobil1, you might see your oil consumption drop significantly. At least that was the case with me...

was it parked level? I had that happen once when the car was parked at maybe a 10 degree lean to the passenger side for 2 days. I don't burn a drop of oil between changes, and it only happened once. but i started it up and was greeted by a fairly impressive cloud of smoke.

You may want to check your coolant level if you haven't already.
It depends if this blue smoke is light or dark.

I've replaced many valve stem seals on vehicles with this scenario. If you know how to use a good, hand held vacuum gauge, you can pinpoint if it's that. The vacuum/boost gauge in a car is not the same.

Coolant level is fine.

Are you talking about doing a leak down test?

The way I remember how to stay the F away from Mobil1 is that the 1 stands for what its viscosity is after 1k miles.

I'm running Amsoil 10w30 right now, and I'm about to switch to 10w40 because of the Arizona heat, but I'm liking it so far.

I've had this happen to me on numerous cars and it still happens randomly with my 350z. I noticed that if I drive the car for a short amount of time (shuffle parking spots), there's a black/blue puff of smoke during start up that lasts about a second. So far, it has probably happend 5-6 times in the last 2.5 years that I've had it. There are times that the car sits for a whole 2-3 weeks and will not smoke during start up.

My impreza also does this but it seems to have gone away after I put the stock exhaust back on. It was doing with the stock motor when it was turboed and after the swap. Only did it randomly when the car sat for a few days.

I don't lose any oil between changes and I use 10w-30 Castrol GTX.
