Default would an 03 ecu work on an 02 model?

i have an 03 ecu from my old wrx, and my 02 has an ECUtec flashed ecu. I would rather have the Cobb AP because there seems to be more support, but i also hear that ecutec locks out other tuners. could i swap my 03 ecu to my 02 wrx, since the ecu is completely stock on the 03?

How long have you had your ECUTek? I just reflashed a car that was ECUTek'd 1 1/2 years ago and it wasn't locked.

You can generally put an OLDER ecu into a newer car from 02-05, but running an 03 ECU in an 02 will give you a CEL. They added an input.

You're car will run 100%, put you'll be stuck with the CEL.

You'll be fine running a 2003 ECU in a 2002 WRX once it's married to the AP because the AP will flash the 2003 ROM with a version from the 2002 WRX when you marry it.

what new inputs are there? i might be interested in retrofitting them on. Another question, once the AP marries itself it flashes whatever year you purchased onto it? so later, when i decide to upgrade to a ej25, could i get a base AP program for a 2.5l block, like the 07 2.5 wrx, and it would flash the base software of that one to it?

I have been told on here you don't actually input a displacement, everything is just done in scaling of the MAF and other stuff. However, if the 2.5L WRX is 32-bit like the STi, you will not be able to flash that map on your ECU because it can only handle 16-bit. This means that you can have the car protuned without issue, but you won't be able to run a Cobb basemap. Hope that helps some.

Oh yeah, if you stay with the 02/03 WRX ECU when you swap in the 2.5L WRX motor, you WILL NOT be able to run AVCS. You'll need a JDM STi ECU (V7 is ideal) along with a tad bit of wire pinning to run AVCS.

For my friend, I put in an 03 wrx ecu into an 02 wrx, and flashed it with an 02 wrx map and everything was fine.

I believe it's direct plug and play because
When he bought the car, the owner comes out with an 03 ecu and just swaps it out onto his 02 car and said things were fine

(at the time we did not know)

So driving later, CEL
I looked up, found that it was ok, flashed 02 map, done.
Never had a problem.
