Default issue with my brand new 07 WRX

how are you doing guys?
i just picked up my 07 WRB WRX today.. i was having fun
driving around the town until i found these couple problems that really
annoy me.

1. i hear this hum/whir noise in 5th gear around 60mph if i step on the
gas, but it goes away as i let off the gas.. it sounds like there
is a little helipcopter under the hood.

2. i smell some kind of alcohol smells when i turn on the air conditioner
but it only smells right after i turn it on. and it seems like the air conditioner is making this 'venting sound' every 2-4 minutes.

maybe i'm little too paranoid on a brand new car.. but it bothers me
anybody has same problems?

#1 seems to be rear diff. problem after i read this thread

*Your turbo is simply hungry for air thats all =].

*The new car scent will stay with you for close to a month, it did with mine. I noticed the venting sound in my AC also, its normal.

maybe i'm little too paranoid on a brand new car.. but it bothers me
anybody has same problems?

*I was also paranoid to the point of insanity, it's a stage everyone goes through and thats why we have forums for all your questions.

Probably your wastegate flapper...min does it when i'm only partially boosting...have them adjust it or do it yourself.

It's a new system and will go away...mine was the same.

THE VENTING NOISE: That pisses me off...my 2000RS didn't do it...i took it in once and they thought they fixed it=still does it. My car is going back in for it...as you should not hear that and I can hear it over the radio

You are not paranoid as I have all the same issues!

Same here but I think they're normal noises namely the turbo and the AC. I'm pretty paranoid too, every time I hear a noise I go "oh my god, what was that, the diff, the tranny, the engine, a rock chip, a dent?!". Most of the time it's just a rock hitting the undercarriage or my sleeping bag rolling around in the trunk.

The helicopter sound is your turbo spinning. High speed accleration = high engine load = turbo spinning very fast. IIRC, the turbo spins in the mid-high 100k RPMs range.

The constant on/off of your A/C is just that. It has a little clutch that allows the compressor to be turned off. It's part of your vehicle's climate control system. Just like the A/C in your home does not stay on all the time, neither does your car's.

this is not constant air blowing sound, it's making this venting noise
that i never heard in 6 years of my driving life

Is the venting noise constant or is it periodic? If you're really concerned just go to the dealership and get it checked out, you do have warranty don't ya?

Man, you'd better not make these "problems" your benchmark for WRX annoyances

My '02 turns on the little helicopter in 5th gear at certain speeds, too, and you can buy a spray at automotive stores to freshen your air vents. Maybe the workers who cleaned your car before it was sold spilled some of their booze.. no biggie.

Relax, helicopter is the turbo as others have said. Sounds to me like the venting is the A/C kicking on and off. It's designed to kick off under heavy throttle to reduce strain and power loss under WOT.

You bought an STi learn to love all the weird noises it makes and is going to make.

If you wanted a quiet car you picked the wrong one.

the noise from the A/C is normal. You are hearing the refregerient flowing through the system as the compressor turns on and off.

Um no it's not buddy.

Like I stated above I have the exact same car with the same a/c noise.

It's not normal...my 2000 RS didn't make it with the a/c on...so why should my car thats 7 years newer make it and it be normal

That said...the a/c turning on and off makes a mechanical noise when the fan kicks on...THAT IS NORMAL.

The OP and myself are talking about a hissing/venting noise.

I recently had them look at it when my oil was done...they said my system wasn't completely full and filled it.

This stopped the noise at idle...however it still does it while driving.

I searched around about this nearly a month ago...and found most people had to replace the evaporator valve. That little baby is pricey!!!

So I will continue to bring it back to the dealership until it is fixed...because my warranty says i can!!

Also...it didn't make it on the test drive.

i also thought this wasn't normal because none of my family/friends/
rental cars i've been in made this kind of noise.
so is it evaporator valve? i see you live in Redmond, WA!!
may i ask you what dealership you are going to get it serviced?
i might going to Renton Subaru next week to get my windows tinted

if every STi makes the same noise. It would be a normal operating characteristic of the vehicle.

Go the dealer, ask to compare to another STi, if the noise is in the other STi you have your answer.

It seems to be all normal. Soon enough you will want a louder sounding helicopter inside of your hood

The noise from your a/c is the clutches engaging and disengaging in the a/c compressor, thats normal.

The "helicopter" sound is the turbo spool, thats normal too.

The alcohol smell inside I have no idea.

I love all the little noises my REX makes. I havn't even turned on the radio since I got my SPT performance parts. I just listen to the engine. I know every little sound. Its music to my ears.
