Default Audio gurus,...best comps for under 300?

Ok, so I'm in the market to buy some 6.5" components and the last couple of days I've spent around 5 hours reading about component options in numerous car audio forums. What I've found out is that as soon as you get almost completely set on a speaker you'll read a post where someone bashes the crap out of it. I know that a HUGE part of buying a speaker is what YOU as a customer thinks about it, but I don't have any shops that sell high end stuff except for Focals. Anyways, from what I've read the top names are CDT, Focal, Rainbow, Dynadio, Morel,...there's more obviously, but that's what I remember most. Now I was almost 100% set on a set of CDT EF-61FG(http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=3341) until I read that someone hated CDT because they had way too much midbass and just didn't make a good product(not completely sure on the arguement...so much reading). Aside from that, almost everyone else had good things to say about CDT. What do YOU think about CDT and why? So after I read about that, I looked for other options in the same price range. I had seen that many people spoke very highly of Morel stuff, but the only set of components in my price range was their base model, the Tempo 6's(http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...oduct_ID=4765). These look really nice also, but to be completely honest I don't know EXACTLY what to look for in the speakers' specs to compare them with other speakers. I'm not even sure if those numbers mean as much as they are perceived to. I looked at Dynaudios, but their cheapest set is like 800 or so. Focals were also said to be really nice, and I plan on going to a local shop that carries them to check them out. So I guess my question is: Which components, with your experience and knowledge, would you get for under 300 dollars?

- CDT EF-61FG
- CDT CL-62(http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?...roduct_ID=5023)
- Morel Tempo 6
- Focal (model comparable to others)

If there are any other comps that are in that price range that you think are better or more of a bang for the buck, please let me know. I was also kinda curious about the two CDT models. The 61's have a higher retail price on that website, but have a cheaper sale price and handle less power and have a lower end tweeter. I'm assuming it's an older model, but just wanted to see what you guys thought about the two in comparison. Please also offer any suggestions. Thanks for your time.

Brooks

Speakers are highly subjective and personal. Who the heck cares what ONE person says? If the general consensus is that something is good, why 2nd guess it...

If you can try to listen to a few sets. Speakers are very very subjective as teiva-boy already said, so nobody but you can really make a call as to what you'll like.

first of all ive been out of the car audio game for a few years, lol, i feel like im relearning what i knew..but anyways, a few months back i installed 2 sets of the CL-62 in a friend neon. powered by an orion 4ch amp. i was very impressed with these speakers, the midbass was great (some may say its too much, but i like a good bit of mid bass myself) an the highs were nice an crisp.

focals are nice, i installed a set (cant remember the exact series) in another friends car. they were definately nice. it was powered by an older orion hcca 225 amp....i should have never sold him my amp.....lol. but i think actually i liked the cdt's a little bit more.

but as much as i liked the way they sounded other memebers on this board as well as a few people i know that still own there own shops have spoke really hightly of the alpine line. so well that i just ordered a set of the spr 17s and a pdx 4.150 amp. the speakers are way under your 300.00 price range an i really cant wait to get them installed an see how they sound.

not sure if this is at all helpful to you but hope a little bit.

I totally realize that at some point speakers become purely subjective and personal, however, if I am not able to hear them myself I would like to at least hear what other people thought about them. Maybe describe some pros and cons. Hines, do you know if you'd recommend the CL-62's or the EF-61FG's? I'm just confused as to why the 61's are at a cheaper sale price than the 62's when they were more expensive retail. I also realize that price isn't everything, but to some point it is. Anyone have any experience with Morels? Anything else in this range? Thanks for the input so far.

Also, I'm a big techno/trance fan. I also listen to rock and some hip hop. I DEFINITELY want to stay away from a tweeter that is going to be piercing and painful at high volumes. From what I've read, it seems like the silk tweeters are the smoothest and best for that application.

Hertz makes a set for just under 3 bills, damn nice too...

ESK 165 - they retail around 300 CDN so under 300 USD for sure! really nice and will fit factory locations great

There's a local place that has Hertz here. I listened to a pair the other day and they sounded pretty good, but I think they were the 2,000 dollar set. Plus they weren't in a car so it's kinda hard to tell. Has anyone listened to the EDi 6500s? I'm really leaning towards the CDT EF-61FGs.

Might i be able to point you over here for a second... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1303041

If you go out looking for reviews, they get really high marks... I bought on reviews and suggestion, i am in the same situation as you as far as going out and listening, there just isn't anything decent around, in terms of shops.....

Had a pair of the CL 61a's in my sister's old civic. I thought they sounded good for the price especially.

CDT makes a good speaker, I prefer them for rock and more mellow music than I would for trance or heavy metal

The review on those EF61-FG's from the link that I posted said that they're really good for techno kind of music. Again, purely subjective. I'm sure I'll be satisfied with either of the speakers, but I do have to say that those Morels looks like pretty sweet speakers. Good frequency range. Any other suggestions for a sub 300 set? Thanks again for the input.

I actually did listen to a set of these not too long ago and they sounded really good. I thought that they were way more than 300 though. Retail, I think they are. Anyways, the car that they were in won some sort of competition with them. Are yours the ones that have a 6.75" cutout? Let me know how you like them when you get them in, or I'll just follow your thread. Thanks for the suggestion.

So I'm kinda looking at some DLS components now. Either the UP6's or the MS6A's. Any opinions on those? Compared to the CDT EF-61FG's? They seem to be a pretty sweet speaker. Here are some links.

Not a DLS fan? Do you have any links to sites that sell these speakers? Any other information to back your recommendations? Thanks.

If you PM djdilliodon here on this forum, he can tell you the differences in the CDTs (and give you a better price than woofersetc probably).

Yeah, I saw that...I just didn't know that they were that inexpensive. Anyone wanna talk me out of DLS's? The UP6's seem like they're pretty legit.

Just my opinion, but JL Audio used to make a nice affordable set of comps with quality parts in the crossover. Worth a listen if you can locate a dealer.

it makes me sad to see people putting cdt up with brands like Focal, Dynaudio, Morel..

I'd go with a Seas set up, but you'd have to go active...

Passive...

I'd go for the Morels parading around as Phoenix Gold speakers. Ti6CompElite. woofers etc has 'em for 299. They need lots of juice. Think 200x2 to start...
