Default Car won't start and can't flash a map!! BIG TROUBLE!...

Hey guys

Today I try to flash a stage 2 sti 91otc map to my 05 STI
and it happened to stop loading the map into the car due to some error (I have not idea what error it was)

After all, I try to flash the map to my car, but all fail...

Now I can't get into test mode... and I can't even start my car

I've use ECU flash a lot when I have my bugeye, but this is the first time I try to flash to my 05 STI

The following is the log and hope you can help me out!

(ps: will Cobb AP help me to flash a map back into the car so I can run it??)

Thanks!!

Did you reset the ecu (pull neg batt, hit brake, put neg cable back on)?

That error looks like what I saw when I forgot to connecto the green connectors.

I did try to reset it but still doesn't work

I've connected the green connectors and has disconnected it...

The car now just won't start

I can get into the flashing mode but I just can't read and flash map into it

Every time I try to flash a map into it
I got

I am afraid I mess up the ECU and something has been burned?...

Will a bad map kill the starter so I can't even start my car now?...

I am soooooooooooooo trouble now

Another guy had the same problem, and after a while of having the battery unhooked, he was able to restart the car.

Edited to add: did you kill the battery trying to get it started (flashing, etc)?

my problem is kind of trouble...

I flashed my map halfway...

so even I reset the ecu how many times

my base map is still not complete...

and I have no idea why I can't read, log, flash my ECU

could that be my ECU die?

Or could my engine die? or any parts that die?...

Attempt connecting the green connectors and starting the car in test mode.

If that doesnt work, connect the green connectors and try reflashing once again. Let me know what happens.

Once you have reflashed exit the ecuflash software, disconnect the green connectors and obdII cable. Then try to start the engine.

Does your car turn over when you attempt to start it?

not at all

My car will crank but won't start

My car won't get into test mode even with just the green connectors connected...

My log keep saying "read fail" so I am afraid I might fired or damaged my ECU by flashing the map ...

Hi , I just have swapped JDM ej25 motor in lack of USDM as it broke down. The one I used to have is SOHC and new one is DOHC so a few sensors were different I swapped them over. But the car won't start Sad Looks like there is no fuel . fuel pump is working. I think ECU is to lazy to work and I need to make it work...
So wondering if any knows a good subaru shop around Vancouver area.
Thanx
Serguei.

To the OP, sounds like your ECU is fried. If you call Cobb, they will tell you to send it in with your accessport and they'll test it and the AP. But the sound of it, your ecu is toast.

Do you guys think I should get an used ECU off this forum and try it out?

Or you guys think is other damaged so my car won't start and get into test mode?

( I can't read and write to the ecu and can't get into test mode... I've reset the ECU for couple of times... still not working...)

I don't think you can easily swap 05 ECU's due to the immobilizer.

In the future, if a flash fails, do not turn the key off! Try flashing again, whatever, but don't turn the key off.

ecu is fried.. almost positive..

get on your local chapter and ask someone if they have a tactrix and see if they can connect to your ecu. If they can, you can find OEM factory tunes to upload to ur car at osecu roms. Then you might be able to install the AP (that is if the tactrix can even connect.."

^ the OP was using ecuflash. Would have been able to reflash if the key had not been turned off.

If you look on the openecu forums, you *might* be able to find someone who can bench-flash the ECU.

I'm in the same boat as you man, I tried flashing my 2007 WRX and now it wont start, it will just crank. I've tried disconnecting the battery for an hour but that didnt help... I'm leaving it off over night to see if that works. I'm afraid the ECU is fried though. Let me know what happens to yours though!

Did you connect the test plugs when flashing? wouldn't he get the voltage out of range if he didn't use the flash block? But make sure that you have the latest version of ecuflash, and have the latest ecu definitions.

Did you disconnect the green test connecters before trying to start it? If you're fans are still cycling, that means you're still in test mode. If you did disconnect them, then eek sorry can't help ya.

And the same goes for you on definitions, and software version.

Jump start your battery or borrow a friends battery. hopefully thats the problem. You might have had low voltage and the flash might of killed it....

i had a very similar thing happen to me on a different car. i was flashing the ECU and the guys battery died halfway though from having the door open for 15 mins. original battery that was half empty... i was pretty pissed when i popped the hood open and saw that. anyways... the car would not take a new map after we recharged the battery.

i pulled the ECU thinking it was dead. i called cobb to see if i could send it into them and they told me to leave it out of the car and then try and install the map again... and it worked.

the issue is that you only have half of the firmware on the ECU so it doesn't have full commands. i would pull the ECU completely out of the car and let it sit for a few days just to be sure all the current is out of it. reinstall the ECU and try and load a base map back on it.

i also called subaru about the issue and they said that as long as the caps and the board were not damaged (which they shouldn't be) you can bring the ECU into them and they can reflash it back to a stock map for $150 (i think that was how much it was).

i would try those options before i bought a new ECU.

from what i have read the 02 ECU is pretty indestructible... not too sure about the newer ones though.

The flash process does not wipe the entire ECU when flashing. It only even attempts to reflash portions that have changed. ECUFlash does a checksum on your ECU and the rom you are attempting to flash and only flashes the blocks that have changed. These blocks are big, only about a dozen in an ECU, but the blocks that contain maps are difference from the blocks that have the boot process in them best I can tell. So when you retune a car and flash it, it shouldn't be overwriting or erasing anything having to do with the boot process.

Honestly it just sounds like your battery is dead. Charge it and try reflashing again. Make sure your green connector is connected. The 05 USDM STI should not need the white flash block.

As others have said, if you think a flash errored out (ECUflash should tell you, PAY ATTENTION), do not turn the key off. Do not touch the key. Leave the key in "Run" while you fix the problem. Put a charger on the car, go charge your laptop if needed, retry flashing. You can reboot your laptop, remove the flash cable, reconnect it, start ECUflash back up and hit the Write button again, etc.
