Default Heated seats

Does anyone know how the heated seats work? are they basically just electric blankets under the leather/upolstry? anyways, i have the regular GT so no heated seats, i think this is prob the greatest feature you can have in the winter, it keeps you warm even if your engine isnt heated up. anyways my question is does anyone know if you can get aftermarket heated seats installed? possibly even subaru ones? i knwo there are places in my car with plastic pieces in the spot where the switches for the heated seats should be. if not subaru anyone know where else to get them?
thanks

I do not know about the OEM ones, but I have aftermarket ones installed in my GT. They definitely are great in the winter When I got them the company that offered it had them for the outback I just had to convince the installer that these are really the same car. This was for a 99 so I do not know about the new generation of them. Good Luck

what company was it that you got them from? i dont think the seat styling has changed much if at all, plus i dont know why that would effect installation, are aftermarket heated seats an exact science?

I saw seat heater inserts in a PB Tweeks catalogue.

I was just looking for some of these yesterday. My daughter needs warmth on her back and I'm thinking of adding these to both 99 Legacy's (Sdn and Wgn). The '01 Forester S comes standard with the heated seats so I'm going to focus on the Legacy's and possibly the 96 OBS as well. IIRC the price was reasonable for a set of seats and since I've put in aftermarket leather, I know how to get the covers off again. The on-line installation directions are first rate.

There's a guy on here that retrofitted a set of VW corrado seat heaters in to his Impreza. I don't know his username on i-club but he posts as G60ing on VWVortex. I'll see if I can get him to reply to this.

Most I-clubs might say just do a search because I know I have covered this 2-4 times already. But I'm not a DIE-HARD Clubber I'm a Vortexer and a Corrado owner first so we are used to repeatting ourselves out of Corrado brotherhood that is formed from owning a rare PITA car.

Ok enough smack.

Here's what I did:
I search all the subaru yards to find the Holy grail Legacy that had heated I finally found them but the place wanted $300+ dollars and that was realistic IMHO since I'm used parting Corrados out I decided that the only way I should install heated seats would be from a car that I'm framilar with working on. So I went looking for another Corrado parts car. $1200 with heated seats. The car was a turd But it had the heated seats and some other goodies that I didn't mind like euros, and a center force clutch and what not.

I took the whole wiring harness from the Corrado and removed 12' of wire so that the relays would be between the front seats along with the switch. I could have removed more wire but why cut your self short. Then I installed the wiring and switch. I used the Mirror's power wire and the shifter's illumination wire for the seats. The Mirrors are on their own 15A circuit. I then made a bracket for the relays to mount on so I could use 2 already available mounting points, IE NO DRILLING. The switch mounted into a dumby plate in the center console. Then I took my seats to an upholstery guy who installed the heating elements for me $80 too much. This is where I &$$** up and should have gone else where because he put the wire end of the elements under my but and I think the wires have now broken off. They need to be forward on the seat in between your legs. Also he wasn't very careful about removing and installing the seats. He was a friends business friend. so figured he's good and didn't help or watch. NEVER let the car be unattended while being worked on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll actually be heading to a nice warm location this afternoon so I'll fix the setup tonight. But I can tell you this the wife and my dad love the heated seats and that it was all worth it.
