Default Funky smell from the air condition

Hello Guys and Gals,

I'm beginning to notice a bad smell coming from my air vents whenever I use my air conditioning. It smells really acrid and musky, almost like a bum. This happens only after I use the air conditioning, not before or during. The first time this happened, I was with my wife and I said "Dang, did a bum crawl under the hood or something"? My wife didn't really notice it but it kinda bothered me. It's happened every time since; the acrid smell always comes after I turn off the AC.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this something that is covered by the warranty or is this just one of those "lovable quirks" that I should get used to?

Any input would be appreciated!

If there was anything dead on your system you will smell it all the time.

The smell you are describing can happen.
In my case, after turning off the AC and letting the fan stay on will provide a muggy, but, not acrid smell on my vents for a couple of seconds.
I just leave the fan on for a minute or so before turning off the car to dry off any moisture left in the system.

check your cabin air filter and see if it is causing the smells...

According to the OP:
"the acrid smell always comes after I turn off the AC."

If the cabin filter was at fault, the smell will always be there.

so the smell is bactiria in the air box. ya the smell is gross but you can fix the problem by taking your car to the dealer and they will spay a chemical in there to kill the smelly bugs!

I just changed my cabin filter this past weekend, along with nukage of the vent system. So far (2 days out), no funk.

Wurth makes an aerosol cleaner for A/C systems - it's ammonium chloride + "febreeze" type odor eliminators - $20-30 a can.

To use, first nuke the vents (Dash, exterior intake under the hood), and the evaporator itself for good measure (leave the cabin filter out for this process). Let sit for 15 min, then start up the car with A/C on recirculate and fan speed maxed. Spray the cleaner into the cabin air return (turn recirculation on & off to see the door on the blower housing open and close - this is the return). Make sure that you put the filter cover panel back on and have the blower motor resistor pack connected before starting up the A/C.

The Wurth can is big enough to do 2 rounds of this treatment.

Make sure to clean the inside of your windows - the cleaner leaves a very slight haze. Alternately, roll down all windows and open all doors to minimize "loading" of the vehicle interior.

To prevent mold/mildew from building up in the evaporator and stinking, it's a good idea to turn off the AC a short distance before reaching your destination and parking, while leaving the vent fan running. This will allow some time for the evaporator to dry out, so there is less standing water where the stuff can grow.
Also do not use the recirculate mode unless absolutely necessary.

all of the above , plus something they have not mentioned

Park the car, leave it on , close your windows almost all the way and on a hot day , turn the heater on, leave it like that for a few minutes
