Default first dyno day organization thread 2007

Anyways this is just the first thread to organize a few things regarding dyno day 2007. As of right now I just want votes for which weekend you guys want and which tuners you want to have in and what not.

DAYS ARE NON NEGOTIABLE!
This is due to the fact everyone has a different schedule blah blah I'm giving three weekends to vote on and the one that gets the most votes. Everyone else that didn't vote that day still has to take days off work, school, events, family, weddings, wife, kids, etc etc etc to make it! without this type of strict regulation lots of people people just don't show up even when they say they will!

DAYS TO VOTE ON.
May 3rd
May 22nd
June 29nd (will run into canada day)

Of course dyno day won't be on just one day but will be multiple day the days given are just weekend it will occur. The duration of how long it will be, eg: thurs-sun, fri-sat Will depend on the turn out! This will be open for about 2-3 weeks for voting then I will automatically take the highest voted day and run with it no matter what.

Now onto the tuner of choice! Last year we had Owen and Jarrad from PDX tuning in Portland fly in. This was overall a great experience and these two were very friendly, knowledgeable, and great to work with. But of course I'm open to suggestions on who you want to call in.

Here is a small list I can think of from the top of my head.
PDX Tuning
Sub Racing
Lightspeed Innovation
Cobb

if you are any of the people listed above please refrain from posting anything to deter peoples decision till it has been chosen by the community. We would all like to send business your way one way another so please just let this be chosen without any outside forces.

This is all for now more things to come when more things are to be organized. This post has been posted both in the www.NASIOC.com Canada forums and the www.albertasubaruclub.com forums.

Thanks and let the fun begin!

Personally I'd be happiest with the guys from Subracing just due to the level of follow up service we could get with them.

I didn't see anyone complaining about the boys from PDX coming up in July. And with no disrespect to the boys at Subracing, I think the PDX boys probably tune way more subies on a day-to-day basis.

My nod goes to PDX tuners on Subracing's dyno like we did last time.

Ok, I'll bite. Last year, PDX didn't want to tune my Hydra. Maybe now that I'm running OEM/OpenECU they'll tune me. If not, well I guess I'm out.

Maybe I can get a professional tune before my car rusts out and my EJ207 starts burning oil 'cause its got 200k on it

Send them a PM and find out for sure. My guess is that they would tune your Hydra now since that's what they're using for the EZ30R motor.

Just thinking out loud.

hey fragment, the setup for this year's dyno will be different so most likely they can squeeze you in. Also this time we know in advance and I plan to try to set it up where it's a pay per hour rather than just squeezing people in.

But send them a PM to see if they wil tune open ecu.

/\ I agree /\

Remember, if we were to invite COBB (for example) that they wouldn't want to tweak/modify PDX's maps. I believe they subscribe to different tuning philosophies and methods of power extraction (according to both PDX and COBB.)

I'd like to see PDX because they're already familiar with most of the maps and tunes around here. Plus, then we wouldn't have to defend ketchup chips to a new bunch of guys!

Vince, what's with the dates? A Tuesday and a Thursday? WTH?

I voted for "the 3rd" or whatever days it will actually be. Early in the year is good!

Before everyone goes bananas about PDX someone should do a poll

"Did you have boost issues with your PDX tune?"

I know Airboy has been busy and I think it may be worth it to give Pat Richard a shot.

Although I wasn't there, I'd like to defend the boost issues. It is my understanding that all tuning was done on the dyno. Well, if that is true, then I'm not surprised that the boost maps were off. A dyno (no matter type or user) will not give a true load compared to road use. Airboy is tuning on the road, which is a great way to fine tune such a dynamic system.

Most people agree that a complete tune is a combination of dyno and road.

So, I don't think you should axe PDX based on that critisism.

We would love to come up. I know a couple cars had problem with boost, but any of the guys who contacted us go the issue resolved. We spent a lot of time getting JC dialed in, and we are always willing to support customers we tune. Additionally we have started spending more time on the road with the cars after they come off the dyno. Nathan and I just finished up a weekend in Florida and we took every car out for a spin after it came off the dyno to touch up the boost map and look for any low end hesitation we could remove.

I wasn't aware that boost issues were a part of dyno tuning only. I think that my comment is largely based on mismanaged expectations. Given the terrible heat, last minute part installs and the (arguable) overbooking I wouldn't have wanted to have lived up to the billing they received before prior to arrival.

I'm just saying that there isn't anything wrong with going Canadian, nor is there anything wrong with trying someone different to see how they might differ.

No matter what everyone decides I'd suggest 2 hours per car so the tuner does have a chance to road test the car and tweak things without the pressure of 20 people waiting in the wings.

Why not a dyno week? 3 or 4 guys a day would mean less pressure on the Tuner, more detailed tunes for everyone and would eliminate 20 guys standing in a parking lot asking "when's my turn?"...

Copying a psot I made on ASC

Just to answer a few questions that were asked...
Yes last time was approximately aout 40-50people drifitng in here and there.

As for later in june or early may the Temperature based on Past records is about 18-20 degrees celcius with 0 precipitation. Definitely don't want it that hot as last time heat soak was a huge issue for us.

As for the turn out you never know because people from last year might have new mods and want a tweak or baseline. Also new people joined the club since then that may or may not have modified their cars. So, I don't really know till it unfolds more. This is the reason for the super early notification to make sure no one misses it!

As for the dates they are generated dates in which I checked the weather etc etc if it is ona thursday just pretend it's the weekend there. It's set like that because depending on the outcome it might run from thurs-mon, or fri-sun all depending on the amount of cars.

It would be great to organize it with the spring supemeet problem is tuners charge per hour and to have them hanging about it money and time for both us as the community and them. But it's definitely an option I'd like to look into and workout.

Also to note remember we can only have one tuner as cost for tuner's are not cheap. First of all we need to fly them in, then pay them to be there, andof couse room and board. As much as I'd like to have everyone fly in and have a good time, I think the cost towards the community will be too great.

Also remember that because it's a dyno meet doesn't mean you have to be tunes or anything come and hang out! Free food, free eye-candy, free rides!

-------------------

extra notes as the dates get planned and tuners picked out, i`ll be presenting the layout of how the dyno tuning will be layed out. there will be time made for extended tuning hours and road tuning.

Default Calgary dyno rates

Riegel tuning here in Calgary can accomodate us Subaru guys.

The rates are
$250 for the first 6 pulls
$150 for the 2nd set of 6 pulls
(this should be plenty)

$95/hour if the car needs time back on the dyno after the road portion of the tune.

FWIW rates per number of pulls work may work out better than straight time. With straight time you're paying $XXX.xx/hour for the tuner to have a software problems with the laptop, to figure out your boost controller and to review the information from the previous pull.

Similarly, a daily rate from the tuner may work out much better as long as there's an understanding of how much work is in a day. For example, the agreement that a day is 2 fully modded cars with the option of a 3rd "easy" car or 3 to 4 "easy" stage 2, etc. cars.

Vincent,

I'm in 100% for a Calgary based tune.
I need a stage II pro-tune badly and would kill for this opportunity.
I do vote on doing it in June.
Keep me posted.

I will definitely be looking into both dyno's but a lot of the concensus is that most people want to use subracing since we've used them before.

though it will be up to cost/benefit decision in the end.

On top of the shop dyno costs, what is it to fly in these guys? Has anybody considered Doug from Topspeed? I know of a few Winnipeg guys who want to go for a tune. Our nearest AWD Dyno is in MN and I don't know if there will be anything for this year.

Using the guys in Calgary totally alienates us up here in the north.

I have said it before and I will say it again, if we can drive 5 hours to edmonton you guys in calgary can suck it up and drive 2.
