Default WRX broken into. Need help watching for parts

My WRX was broken into last night. Stolen were the stereo (Clarion 9375 head unit, DSP unit, 2 Fusion 1000 watt amps, and 2 12" Fusion Powerplant subs). They also took the dash pocket under the stereo, so maybe they are looking to sell it back to someone with a WRX.

Also stolen was a TurboXS Unichip setup. That is prob. fairly unique, and is only any good to someone with a WRX.

Anyway if anyone sees any of this stuff in a WRX or hears tell of someone looking to sell it, let me know...

Craig

wow, that sucks! Whereabouts are you in Ottawa? Watch this board and the montreal board for somebody selling these things.

I'll keep an eye out... I'll keep mine in the garage!!

Good Luck,

Matt

Default Downtown area

I live at 169 Lees Ave. Was just talking to the rental cop security guy and he says there are at least 2 more cars in the garage that got hit last night. Looks like someone made a sweep.

but how the hell would they know to take the unichip..... maybe the person who did it knows you... maybe indirectly.... thats weird for someone to take the ECU piggy back you had it covered under the carpeting didn't you??

Ouch. That would be like me having my Tec-II stolen. How many car thieves pop the hood and look at mods they can steal... unless they have their own car like that. How many people pull the carpeting up to see if you've added a unichip? Wow.

But still if you can afford to plonk down $30K+ for a WRX it seems strange they'd be the type to break into cars...

Does the chip they stole have applications for any other cars? Mention anywhere in public (like this forum or other) that you had this stuff? It does seem like they knew what they were looking for.

Default The manual was the tipoff on the Unichip I think

I had the installation guide in my briefcase in the back seat from when I had it installed. They went through my briefcase, prob. found the instructions (which are gone as well) and took it out. It looks like a professional sweep, as 4 other cars were hit that same night. Also a patient group, everything is very professionally removed, nothing broken or cut around the stereo. That would have taken some time...

Imagine the time required to pull up the carpet to access the ECU. I'm not sure how detailed the instructions were but whoever took it _had_ to know what a unichip was.

Default Yup had the factory Subaru alarm

Looks like the WRXs are just as easy to get into as the Civics were a few years ago. The fit of the door and door glass is so loose that its no prob to get in.

The battery is the weak spot on the alarm, plus the inside hood release. If there was a way to disable the hood release from the inside then you'd have a chance, but with the current setup its just way too easy.

I think there is some value in the alarm for theft of the car, but its worthless for protecting the contents.

I think the tip off on the Unichip was the instructions (the ones from TurboXS used to install it) and the invoice from TurboXS in my briefcase. Prob. saw that it was a $1000 (Canadian) part, so hey might as well grab that too.

I "should" have had the inside trunk release disabled. At least that would have made them work a bit to get into the trunk.

According to what I know so far they were working on cars in the garage for 2-3 hours (have video of them coming in and leaving). 3 cars that I know of were hit. Definitely ballsy thats for sure.

Anyway, its time to move :-)

Craig

I mentioned this to a cop friend to see what he thought about this. He feels that with the theft of an item so model specific, you WERE targeted. It would be easier to steal your whole briefcase than go throught it. That makes it suspicious. If a thief can't see it at first glance it's not worth the time to go looking for it. They knew what you had. The thieves then went after the other cars to cover it up since they seemed to have the time & could score some more after the intended hit. His suggestion is to inquire about what the other victims lost. His bet, nothing as valuable/specific as yours. Worth checking out anyways. Might then make it a crime worth investigating for police.

I hope all turns out well for you.

I'll post a copy of your message on the Toronto-Subaru-Club board.

Sorry to hear man, you are only the third person I know of in Ontario with the Unichip, so we'll all watch for things down here near T.O.
