Default 7,500 mile oil change interval?

I'm new to Subarus, as well as new cars in general. I just bought an 07 Impreza special edition, and added it to my previous car of 10 years, a 1987 Volvo 240 Wagon. I've been doing most of my own maintenance on the volvo for quite a while and have some questions about the Subaru.

Specifically, and most importantly, does anyone follow the 7,500 mile oil change interval? That seems a bit crazy. I still do 3,000 mile change on the volvo with conventional oil. I planned on running synthetic on the new car, so I figure I can stretch it out to 5k or so. Also, I always thought you were supposed to change oil soon after buying a new car.

As far as general maintenance, is there anything that's best left up to the dealers?

I'd read Unabombers Manifesto as it will answer all of your questions. But, changing the oil before 7500 miles under normal driving conditions is a waist of money.

It may be a waste of money but i replace my oil every 3,000 miles with royal purple...I'm very cautious when it comes to my car.

Since I own a WRX (i.e. turbo), I change my oil & filter every 3000 miles to be on the safe side...especialy in the summer months. If I owned an RS (i.e. non-turbo), I'd change the oil & filter every 5000 miles.

Performing oil changes every 3000 miles may cost a little more (you'd save money if you did it yourself), but it's cheap insurance compaired to replacing a turbo or an engine.

Everyone is going to tell you different thing, in the end it's your car and just do what makes you comfortable.

Look on your manual. Do the severe service interval. I was reading the other day that Subaru here in the US is saying that ALL turbo cars are severe service and need to follow that interval.

The only, I repeat, ONLY way to determine a good interval for you is by an oil analysis. All other answers are opinion and/or BS.

QTF
If the tests come back good, it's a waste of your time and money to change the oil so soon. If it makes you feel better, feel free. I drove my WRX rather hard and changed the oil every 4-5K and it was always fine.

if you are using dino oil 3k. Synthetic is a bit too expensive for 3k intervals.

Shouldn't ice creme trucks have their oil changed more often with all that hard driving?

Ppshh, nah FBI Ice-creme trucks get that special oil.

They can go 4-5k OCI.

Besides he probably gets a deal with his FBI-Ice-Creme-Advance-Auto-Parts discount card.

you definately should... especially during the break-in period. They're are lots of metal parts rubbing together that are brand new (gears, rear diff, etc..) and they are in a sense being "broken in". During this time period little metal pieces are being broken off into the fluid aka your oil or your rear diff. fluid.

It's wise to change both the rear diff. & the oil before 2000 miles gets on the car. Many people will tell you it's not necessary, even the dealership told me it wasn't necessary to change the rear diff. But I saw the rear diff fluid at 1500 miles and it was gray with metal shavings in it (not huge hunks, but it was not good)
Leaving these small metal pieces within the internals of your car is like putting nails in a blender when your making a smoothie. it will tear stuff up eventually.

hope that helped

I think this should be based on how long the oil filter can do it's job properly, the oil will do its job but if the filter falls through.....not good..

SilverFox: Meh ... most people change the diff oil every 30k (if that) and diffs almost always last the life of the car. If it needed to be changed so early, Subaru would say so.

Subaru recommends if car is driven under severe conditions to change the diff oil at 15k
