Default Head Gasket club question

Hi I am happy to say MY98 25 which has 83,XXX has joind the Subaru Head Gasket Club of America. I do have one question about this but, first here is the history.
About four month's or so ago I installed a UR race clutch with a 11lb flywheel. A few day's later I began to get cylinder misfire's in #3,4 at steady throttle while going 75 to 80 mph I thought this may be caused by the lack of rotating mass with a light fly wheel. The problem seemed to stabilize after I replaced my timing belt two months ago so I figured it was do to a loose worn out belt. Well, then it stared again last monday. On Wed. I was driving to work when I drove up on some guy in a porshe boxter who wanted to play. So we danced all the way to 110mph when boom smoke bellowed from the engine bay when I got to work I pulled it into the shop and found that I blew coolant all over the place and that the bottom radiator hose was cold so I replaced the T-Stat. That night I noticed that as the car almost reached operating temp and I would give it gas the temp would drop down to cold and the overflow tank would fill. I figured that the rad. cap was weak and preamaturly bleeding off the preasure so I replaced the cap, no good. So I did a search ad foud I am not the only one who has had this problem with the coolant bloowing out and what the cause is, HEAD GASKET.

But, what is the deal with the misfires. Bad block?

The only experience I've had with a subaru and cooling ws about 8 years ago. Almost identical except it wasn't the head gasket, it was the head itself.

You should have done a complete diagnostic work up the very first time you encountered a problem. Running it after the first occurence, like I did years ago, just made it so much worse that the motor became worthless. At the time, subaru heads used and not even rebuilt were going for about $800 each.

Needless to say, the car went bye bye...

Thanks for the info. I have also noticed at 3000 to 3500 Rpm my exhaust temp starts to drop and go crazy. If I am at cruse it sits at about normal.

I think the misfire is caused by the same thing the bad head gasket. The coolant is leaking into the cylynders and diluting the gas casuing it not to ignite. I had a bad headgasket in my ford its only symptoms were rough idle and then all of a sudden it was blowing white smoke out the tail pipe. Your symptoms sound a little different. From the sound of it you are probably looking at replacing the whole engine.

My advice to you if you have a choice do not get a remanufactured engine try and get a new engine. When my ford went out it was covered under a recall but they put in a remanufactured engine which had cracked cylynders after 4000 miles and they replaced it again under warranty and the second replacement engine is now out of warranty and uses 3 quarts of oil per 1000 miles and they will not replace it. Of course subaru probably isnt as ****ty as ford but I will never use a remanufactured part again.

my MY98 RS just blew out its second head gasket yesterday. The last time it was still under warranty. This time it is not. Im at 71,000 miles, and ive been fighting subaru all day long. Do the math, first time it went 35,000 miles. 2nd time, 71,000 miles. Good luck with it, cause i feel im in for a long fight.

If you lived closer I would do them for you. I am a Acura tech not a Subie tech and it took me 6Hrs to remove the engine and change my head gaskets and all my oil gaskets. Oh and give all the parts a little wash while it was out. If you go to the dealer for service you could see if you could get your hands on one of the tec's to do it on the side tec's love side work NO TAXES and we make more!
