Patrick Olsen, I've been following your build. It has the type of imagination that is not often found with the WRX kiddos that usually talk negative to other Subaru owners about ideas. More often than not I find that the Legacy Outback crowd has an awesome "here, have a cold beer!" As you walk up welcoming committee. I got your build link from of the LegacyGT forum after I posted some questions on the Third generation Legacy Forum :

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...ed-215382.html

I'm really liking the pioneer work I see on here with the silver BD you've got. I will be experiencing all of the same mechanical difficulties with the H6 swap. My biggest concern going into this was the idea of was it going to be worth it for the money for the potential that the motor offers. No timing belt, I'd most likely not blow a HG again, and (since I closed on an entire parts car) ill swap the Automatic A/C in as a nice bonus. I hear the the EZ30 is a dependable motor and very "livable" as a daily driver through just routine maintenance. And lets face it the L. L. Bean Outback is a car that a retired United States Vet would buy and probably never miss any scheduled maintenance on it while keeping full records. The man I bought the Bean from had brand new tires on it, a battery that was less than a year old and still a full tank of gas. These H6 motor have a likely hood of being less abused than the EJ series motors by far.

Not too many people have built the EZ30D motor here in the states more so than NZ and Australia. So, Dodik directed me a man that worked with the Raptor Super Charger originally designed for the EZ30R motor and made it work great with the "D"designated motor. His name is Car Doc and his build is on the Outback forums here:

http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/...eeper-vdc.html

Great build! Of course the typical haters and naysayers but the project came to fruition for Car Doc.

So here's my Black Granite Pearl 1999 Legacy GTmt:

With the EZ30D motor going for so high here in town and on EBay with auctions such as this:

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...obalID=EBAY-US

I really had to just sit and search for months. I finally came on a Craig's listing for a parts car 2003 L. L. Bean Outback with 60K miles on the clock. When I went to see it it started up and even moved after sitting for a month. The car has too much panel damage to be fixed and the owner settled on 800.00 cash for it. Interior is MINT. I came and towed it away the next day with the title in hand.

The Gold Numbers you were looking for!

Now, I've spent enough money on this car for another month. Since I have a full car to work with on my swap and not only just the motor what do you think could have helped your swap along easier if you had parts from this car?

It's good to be appreciated.

If you can make that work that would be pretty sweet. Apparently the BD/BGs came with auto HVAC in Japan, so I've occasionally seen the auto "head units" on ebay (like this one, for instance). Without having any idea how it works or what it would take to interface with the car, I've never picked one up. Having the full system that you can pull from the BH should work out well.

I found that thread the other day. Haven't made it through much of it.

Diggin' the Morettes - don't see those often! You need to black out that lower grille mesh.

Wow, that's a frickin' steal! With parting it out I would guess you'll be able to come out ahead and basically get a 60k engine for free. (Hindsight being 20/20, I should've done something similar. I got a great deal on this engine I'm using, but then I spent a couple grand doing a complete rebuild. I should've just found a ebay motor with reasonable mileage on it and swapped it as-is. Ah well...)

It would've been nice to have had access to the engine as originally installed by the factory just to be able to see how things (wiring, plumbing) are routed. I'll have to come up with a list of things I'd like to see.

Some thoughts:
- PS lines. EZ30 uses a different pump with a remote reservoir. EJ25D lines aren't going to work with EZ30 pump. EJ25D pump won't fit into EZ30 bracket (and the pulley has the wrong # of ribs on it, anyway). So, looks like you have to use the EZ30 hard lines - I need to order those. It looks like there's a junction on the BD hard lines before the lines pass down through the front cross-member - can I disconnect there, or do I need to replace the lines all the way to the rack?

- PS reservoir. I have the reservoir and mounting bracket, but haven't figured out exactly how/where to mount it. I know from pics that it sits just forward of the ABS module on the EZ30 cars, but I don't know if we have the same room there.

- A/C configuration.
----- I'm going to end up using the BD condenser, evaporator, and accumulator/drier.
----- The hard line from the acc/drier to the condenser will stay the stock BD piece.
----- The line from the compressor to the evaporator will be a hybrid. The compressor end has to come from the EZ30 because of the way it hooks around the intake manifold, but the firewall ends on the two are different sizes, so one way or another I'll be getting the line modified by a local shop. The length of the EZ30 line is fine, lines right up with the connection on the firewall, so I'll probably have the shop put the EJ25 hose end onto the EZ30 line.
----- The line from the compressor to the condenser will also be a hybrid, I think. I need to put my condenser in place and take a look at the two lines (BD version and EZ30 version) to see what needs to be done there.

- Evap cannister. My car has the evap cannister in the front passenger corner of the engine bay; I think some cars had it in the back near the fuel tank fill pipe. (I don't know if that was a wagon thing or a different model year or what.) I think the EZ30 has it in the rear of the car, so I have to figure out how to route the lines so that I have the evap cannister in the flow path. My cannister will no longer fit in the stock location due to the longer engine, so I also have to figure out where to put it. I don't know if it's possible to convert to the rear-mounted style?

- Vacuum/PCV/breathers. I'm a bit in the dark on this. I have a hose nipple sticking up off the top of the driver side valve cover, and the PCV valve is located a few inches back from that, but I don't know where the lines were routed from either of those. I don't have the stock EZ30 "torque box" or intake pipe, and intend to make my own CAI of some sort, so I need to figure out how/where to connect those. You've got the full stock setup, so it should be easier to figure out.

it might just be your leggy pat, my GD impreza was a straight swap for radiator, PS reservoir, fuel lines, intake airboxes, everything. even would have been for the A/C if i still ran it. mechanically it couldn't have been easier.

^^^typical WRX owner. : \ meanwhile on the more constructive side....
Patrick if you need me to snap some pics of the original set up I can do so for you.
I'm sure that the set up was more similar to the other Subaru cars being built during parallel years of one another. The BD comes from another generation. The L. L. Bean Outback I scored is a 2003 and its has very little of the same engine bay configuration.
Tré's car had to have a complete revamp on that engine bay looks like and he still doesn't have a operational speedo or tach. That's gotta be a headache to say the least.

First thing I see diff is that the coolant reservoir is on the drivers side on the L. L. Bean..just taking a quick look.

i don't own a WRX, never have.

vac lines: to the manifold via a nipple in the top centre of it, and the other connects to the stock "torque" box.

i was able to simply connect my impreza PS lines up to the EZ pump and bam, done.

also could have connected the impreza A/C condenser (whatever that radiator-like piece is) to the EZ pump but didn't run AC.

mine's in, running, and basically in the exact same configuration it was when in the leggy.

here, i'll explain:

dude's just delusional. any help people want/have wanted, i've been glad to give and will continue to do so. this swap mechanically speaking couldn't be easier in an impreza. if people don't like being told when they do something wrong/incorrect/foolish, that's their problem. i'm actually helping them, if they could just put their ego's aside for 5 seconds...

RedMonkey, I could go back in this thread and quote several negative things Fishy said where he just rubbed people the wrong way with his negativity. Delusional.....still taking jabs at people Fish? Never learns..a quality that only the truly insane lament.

it's not a jab, it's an observation. that's the problem here - you can't tell the difference between someone telling you something for you own good, and ripping into you. i didn't say rallyguy is an idiot, i said his intake isn't going to work very well and even told him what a good one was. if i'd done something poorly/wrong, i would WANT someone to tell me so i could get it right and have a better car. that person would be HELPING me. but you can't see that.

i think you're just a fool who can't take criticism well, most likely because you receive it in perpetuity as result of the aforementioned foolishness. if you don't like being criticised, try being correct more often.

otherwise, i await your hilarious argument of my "negativity". in the meantime, i will drive my fully working H6 into a GD impreza swap that i have modded and detailed how to do the swap/mods for anyone else wanting to do the same thing. if showing everyone else how to do it isn't adding to the thread, i don't know what is.

This, right here. Someday when I do an H6 swap into a GD, I'll be coming in here and looking for helpful info that you, and others like you, have posted.

As for Senor Butthurt, maybe you should stay away from the internet, and maybe people in general. There is a big difference between constructive criticism and negativity. Most of VFs posts I've seen have usually been in the "hey, you did this wrong, try this instead". The negativity version would be "hahaha, you jacked that crap up! What a tool!!".

That's funny, cause I don't think I've taken any critisism from you Fishy. I'm merely observing the effect you have on others in this thread. I love how you "invent" stuff up to validate your weak posture. Truly insane I love it! And Greg anyone that uses the term "butthurt" really has maturity issues to say the very least. Bunch of kiddos here. Enough of this rant. It doesn't seem like Fishy will stop making things up after I've only posted about my car once!! Lol. Thanks for the warm welcome little Fishy.

So you're going to say that people who have joined the military, Army in my case, where "butthurt is a very common term have "maturity issues"? But hey, that's probably to be expected from a drama queen like you, living your sheltered life and than crying about people being "negative" on the internet. Know what you're talking about before opening your burger swallower, and then think about if you'd have the balls to sat this **** to someones face. And yes, I would say all of this to your face.

Sign-out button is up there on the top-right, since you seem to have trouble with the internet.

i haven't made anything up, if someone else has a problem with me then that's their problem and none of your business, butthurt is an entirely apt description of you, i'm still waiting for you to demonstrate all my "negativity", and it's not "posture" it's "position" you MORON.

in summary: i don't know whether to tell you to kill yourself or get mental help. either way as long as you don't ever reproduce the world will be a better place.

now stop posting bull**** and let us get back to the cars. i'm not the only person that's told you you're not welcome here and (and i'm paraphrasing) to f**k off.

This. Please take directed comments to PMs. I don't agree with Viscous's recent comments but lets keep things on topic. My 3.0R-T is weighlayed till I have more funds and don't want my email constantly blowing up unless someone finds me the specs for aftermarket bearings for me or a sourceif they aren't EJ specs.
