Default Engine mounts dead at only 93 k miles?

My 96 legacy has 93k miles on it. Ive had a rough idle for the past 5k miles or so. I took the car to a mechanic and he said that the rubber in the mounts has deteriorated to the point that the mounts are pretty much just metal now, and that the rough idle is just the vibration caused by there no longer being any rubber to dampen it.

After what happened with the mechanic, i do not trust him. Could this actually be the case?

can i crawl under the car and take a look at the mounts?

You can see the mounts under the car. They will be between the engine block and the engine crossmember, which is just in front of the oil pan (standing at the grille and looking back toward the tailpipe).

Normally you can't tell if an engine mount is worn unless the engine is removed - it's a rubber part so unless it's falling apart it's a bit tough to tell.

It's possible that the engine mounts are shot, but my cars have 93k and 208k on them, with no problems idling.

I bet it's something related to the idle air valve in the car, or maybe a dirty MAF sensor.

Stick a jack under the tranny and jack up the motor and watch the motor mounts. If they are toast, they will separate as you jack!

I have toasted one completely in two before myself.

Another way to tell is open the hood up while the engine is running, push the throttle cable to quickly rev the car engine. If the engine moves a whole lot, it's the mounts.

I highly doubt its the mounts though TBH. I just pulled my stock ones out for group N ones and the rubbers look like new after 80k miles and 4 years of NE winter and salt.

I had rough idle and a very very shaky engine when the plug wires and plugs needed replacing. Does it idle smoother when the engine is warmed up? That would rule out mounts as they don't care what the engine temp is...

No, the car idles just as bad at all times. I should replace the wires, i was told that was overdue. Where abouts is the idle air valve located?

The mechanic said he cleaned the throttle body, and there was a lot of gunk. It stopped a hesitation problem i was having assumingly from the throttle getting stuck partially closed
