Question Fog Lights - Dumb Question

Not having anything better to do as I waited for my wife to finish shopping I started rooting around in the dash to see what it would take to retrofit my 2001 L Wagon with Fog lights and I found that the factory fuse is in place and if I stick my hand up thru the opening to see how hard it would be to pop out the switch blank-off plate I can feel wires attached to the back of the blank plate. So the question - It would seem to me that I'm already wired for the fogs. Is this right? Are their wires at the front Bumper openings too?

Also - there are two (2) blank -off plates on either side of the Cruse Control switch - one is for the Factory Fog Light switch but what is the other one for? Both feel like they have wires attached to them? Seems that Subaru has just dead ended wires on the blank plates - would like to use the second location for a Driving Light Switch but would be nice to know what the wires are for?

Thanks

Ken

Ken,

Sorry but there is no wires going to your bumper. But you can just buy the Fog Light switch and a aftermarket fog light. That would be a lot cheeper than getting the factory fog light kit.

What year Legacy do you have? I have the factory GT fogs sitting in my garage. I will give you a deal if you want them. They are in perfect condition and have brand new bulbs.

white knight - The lack of wire in the bumper area is no big deal. I intended to go with aftermarket lights anyway. BTW my local dealer quoted $60 for the switch!!! I'm trying a different source right now.

HIHO - "to retrofit my 2001 L Wagon " Thanks but right now I'm tending toward Hella Micro DE Fog Lights

Anyone on what the wires are and where they go?

Default switch

Kbrate,

if my existing switch works, It's PIAA, they changed the wiring harness on me, so they sent me a new one along with a new switch which is identical. If my exisiting one works, I can give you the new switch. It's one of those button ones. you'll have to figure out the wiring of it.

Let me know.

What year are your factory fogs? I'm probably getting a 99 Legacy L Sedan and would like to put the factory fogs on it. Will your's fit? Is it a full factory kit with relay, wiring, etc.? let me know. Thanks, D

Default Useless switch blank

On my '99 GT the extra blank (I only had one) was for the TCS switch. Did Subaru ever offer that option? There is also a cutout in the dash for the TCS light. Weird. Anyway, that's my small bit of knowledge.

Ken,

Having just completed a factory fog light and security upgrade to my 99 Legacy L Wagon, I too had blank plugs with wires attached to them. I'm not completely sure about the 01 Legy but on mine, one of the blanks was for the security upgrade "armed/disarmed" indicator and the other was for the fog light switch gear. If your Legy is like my 01 Forester, then one of the blanks is probably for the windshield wiper defroster which is standard on the Forester S (and probably Outbacks too) and the other would be for your factory fog light setup.

BTW SubaruParts has the complete factory setup available for your car P/N H4510AE300 Fog Lamp, $194.96. The directions were clearly written, well illustrated and straight forward and I actually did both the factory security upgrade and the fog lights in the same day. I did use the blank plug connector for the security alarm upgrade but the connector on the harness that came with the fog light upgrade replaced the one was attached to the other blank plug (the fog light switch plug). Hope this helps and email me with any questions.

Dale

Thumbs up

Roundthebend - Thanks for the info. I don't know why but I never would have thought of the security system....

I do have some specific questions so I'll e-mail you but in general how do you think the Factory Fog's work? I'm torn between the ease of install vs a better Fog Light like the Hella's. Wish I had gotten this done before winter set in but ....

Anyone have Hella's Micro DE's? If you look on the Hella site they look like they put out a great deal of light for a 2 1/4 Dia Light!! I just don't know if I can do the install before spring and the factory lights should be a snap.

Default stock fogs chipped up and dull?try this

i couldnt take my stock fogs anymore, they were damaged from road debris and the light output wasnt sufficient. so i did this mod, i bought two fog light covers that come with the L model legacy and cut out the mesh so the fog lights can peek through, and they also provide a cleaner look when removing your stock fogs. the fog has two bulbs, a blue city bulb and a bright white fog lamp. im very happy with the results and it looks pretty good for a homemade job.

Well "Dumb questions" never die they just keep comming back -

legaseegt - very similar to what I had planned. What lights did you use and how did you mount them?

bln scub - couple of questions - 1) what did you pay for the switch (the dealer around here wanted $60.00!!! do you have a PN? I'm interested in pictures as I've poked around a bit and I don't see any wires. Waiting for further info/ pictures

Would love to see a wiring diagram of a 2001 Legacy L - anybody got a service manual they could scan?

Default well

i have the wiring print and will include pics tommorow of everything i have
for 2001 legacy l and gt
the wires are there you might have to remove bumber skin which is very easy
also the relay from dealer is about $28. the switch was laying around the irvine subaru dealer so it only cost me 30 but was probaly a 99 part was keyed wrong for the plug but you use the YELLOW PLUG in the dash i think on 2001.

the wiring in the fog light area is connected to the air bag system sensor loom
so start there.

tommorrrow pic's

to answer what goes where the other knock-out plate is on the 2001 legacy. You you know the outside one is for the fog lights and the inside one is for the option of heated windshield wipers. Go to the dealership and look in an outback limited. There's a button there to turn on the heaters. There's also a switch by the mirror controls for heated mirrors and the rear window defroster is by the ac control. More info than you need, but now you know. And if you find a wrecked legacy at a junkyard, most places sell stuff like the switch for about $10. Maybe the forrester shares the same switch so you can search for junked forresters too?!? I got some other parts from a forrester that was wrecked cause many of the parts are found on all three body types...
