Default Crankshaft Pulley Removal

Has anyone removed the crankshaft pulley without the special tool that keeps the crank stationary? If so could you please let me know how you did it?

huh? what special tool?
I just did the "put it in 5th gear and step on the brake" procedure when I did mine.
