Default 04 330i vs. 06 WRX Stg. 2 . . . bench racers unite!

Ok, me and this fella at work (he owns the stock 330i) have this debate going on about who is faster. I'm stage 2 (OTS), he's stock, and short of racing him on the street (which I don't do) the argument go on and on. I can show him the track times of our cars from internet postings or from manufactures specs, but this doesn't seem to satisfy him. I agree that there are a lot of variables that can make a difference and it seems that in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, stock BMW to Stock WRX, its a drivers race with the research I've done going to the Subby by a 1/10 sec. or so. However I keep telling him I'm stage 2 and I think I should readily take him in the areas we keep arguing about - that being 0-60 and 1/4 mile. I told him that up to say 100 mph or so I should take him and after that he would begin to walk me. Of course I give the interior and quality of materials to him hands down.

On the handling side of the equation its a toss up-maybe, I don't know. He does have the sports package, but I'm riding on Cusco Sways (f/r) w/ endlinks, STI Prodrive springs, Tokico D-specs and Group N tophats (f/r) and topping it all off with Azenis-615's.

I know it's silly to be having the argument in the first place, but I can't help thinking I should take him.

So what do you bench racers think?

He doesn't, he just claims to be faster. He doesn't really know much about drag racing.

You are going to hear it anyway. If you read the sticky at the top of the froum this is not a street racing /kills forum. Just proven power such as dyno numbers and time slips.
Proven power states it at the top. Not "will I"

Im not going to say he definitely wont beat you, but i raced an 03 M3 in my 05 stg 2 and I stayed about a half a car ahead until about 105 then he started to pull pretty good. You should be running about 270 tq to his 200-215. I would bet on you.

well then take him to your local drag strip and see what he's got thats the only way to find out. i go to the local drag strip here a lot and ive seen a few four door 325's out there. they're not that impressive. i want to say high 14's low 15's. but in drag racing its about the driver. take him to the track

Does he have an automatic or manual? 04 330i has 225HP and only 214 torque. His 0-60 is 6.9s (with the AWD). I would put my money on your WRX short of highway speed 3 honk illegal racing, not to mention your car will do it at over $10,000 less.

man I dunno my mom has a 03 330i and I currently have a 03 wrx and I feel like my car would beat her off the line for sure and up to 60... after that the bimmer feels real strong...

Bottom line: its all about who is a better driver with the launch etc.

I have seat time in both cars (stage 2 '06 wrx and AWD 330).

If the wrx driver knows how to launch, he would win the drag race by a LOT.
Around a road course it's totally a drivers' race. Top speed is a toss-up.

Why is everyone talking about a 330xi?

Did I miss where he said it was the AWD version? A 330i is obviously not AWD. The AWD car cuts a quikcer 0-60, but after that the RWD 330i is significantly faster.

I'm sure he'll be fine up to about 100, then things will even out...but stop comparing a 330xi. Significantly slower car once rolling.

You should roast him at just about anything (maybe not 110&up). I used to track my stg 2 rex at bimmer HPDEs and the only thing I had trouble with was the e46 m3s when they were driven well or turned into pseudo race cars. Wanna really make it no contest? Get it pro-tuned. I was actually thinking of getting a 330i and then I saw how slow it was. I think you two need to go to a BMWCCA HPDE.

To add my $0.02 to this discussion. In SCCA autoX, both the WRX and 330i are classed in D-stock. The 330i is one of the cars 'to have' in the class, while the WRX is competitive but is usually a few ticks back.

To the OP, as you have a 2.5L '06 WRX, you'll beat him in a drag race with a decent launch. Around an autoX course or race track, it'll be a toss-up - even with your handling upgrades.

the newer 330i's are pretty quick, but mostly they pull hard on the freeway...with a little less pull around town...

but You'll beat him

Well, from what Im seeing my thoughts on the subject are mostly right. The closest drag is about a hour away, and I'm not too keen on beating up my trany on a sticky track just to prove him wrong.

I realize top end he should have me. But I figured I could take him in the 1/4 at least.

come on...an 06 stg. 2 should definitely beat a stock 330i in the 1/4....easily.

all racing is about the driver.
I beat a 400hp Atom with the track package in my stock Corvette by 10 seconds on a 1:45 autox course.
And I was beat by a stock 97 M3 by over 5 seconds.

I also beat a C6 z06 in the 1/4 mile. the best he could turn was a 12.5, where i ran a 12.4. Having a "better" car is meaningless if you can't drive it. the BEST mod you can do is improve the driver's skills.

+1^^^

Regardless of mods you said it when you indicated that he didn't know much about drag racing. Of course If you don't either since the track is an hour away then you two can claw this out for months while no one will submits.

So, he's a better douche than you?

If you're serious about it, why not just go to a track? If he doesn't want to, then he's a chicken douche.

This isn't the "street racing" thread that the boyscouts are mustering for is it?
They're not even talking about racing. They're bench racing.

I think the 335i will take your stage-2 WRX, depending on how you drive it. They supposedly run mid-13's, and that's with less traction and more weight than your lower-powered car. But that's also with a real driver behind the wheel, not some shmo from the office. So who knows.
