Default Warranty with rust?

I removed the factory STi spoiler to see how hard it would be to swap out. Anyways, there's rust in multiple spots on the decklid, some almost all the way through. It's an 04 with just under 40K. How would I go about trying to get this warranted (if at all possible)?

Ok, I took it to the dealership and they gave me the BS story that rocks and debris can get under the spoiler of the STi and they scratch the paint surface, allowing moisture in causing the rust, thus voiding the rust warranty...

As it is a "Rust Perforation Limited Warranty", you should have been rejected for not having an actual hole. see: http://www.subaru.com/owners/warranty/index.jsp

If it is rusted all the way through, AND the remainder of the panel has no damage (showing proper maintence). Then it should be covered, as it is not an exposed surface, which should qualify for the "inside out" rust requirement. In which case I would notify SOA on the phone (and in writing), about your dealer's denial.

Be aware, according to the warranty, they would only have to patch the hole, and throw some primer on it (it doesn't have to match the rest of the car).

Of course, it never hurts to try to get SOA to cover it. I would call SOA, they may cover it for good will.

+1 for finding surface rust under the sti spoiler. multiple minor spots with no holes, so figuring SOA isn't going to be covering it. shiesty.

Got a pic?

Is it actually bubbling, or is it just rust coloured spots?

Keep in mind, it is a perforation warranty meaning that it has to have rusted from the inside out as well as through (an actual defect)

I had a Honda S2000 a couple years back, and it began developing rust (of course in the traditional Honda spot, rear quarter). At first they said there is nothing they can do about it, because it wasn't through the metal. After some arguing back and forth, and my explaining to the service rep. that me, nor any of my family members would buy a Honda again (my sister had a civic $17k, my mother a prelude $24k, and me the s2000 $36k, all bought from the same dealer) that this is the flagship of their car lineup, it isn't driven in the winter, and that I would post on every single Honda forum that I could find their poor quality service, they gladly fixed the rust, searched for any other rust fixed that also, and sent me on my merry way.

Now for the best part...
about 3 months later I flipped the car over twice, nearly died, and bought a Subaru!

Note: It was a freak accident I wasn't being a dumba**

So good luck with trying to get them to fix it.... (going back to my beer)
