Angry Leaking coolant (and my trip to my dealer) Part 2 (kinda long)

As many of you know I had issues with a coolant leak that started about a month ago after I installed a STi radiator cap. It appears the higher radiator pressure with the STi cap caused a pressure leak. I took the car into my dealer and they found no leak, (STi cap was removed), even though there was coolant residue all under my hood......
"Pressure tested cooling system, test drove for 5 miles, idled car for 2 hours ... No problem found." Read my copy of the invoice for that visit......
Well for the past few days my wife has said she smelled coolant when we have gone out in my WRX. Yesterday I opened the hood to disconnect the battery to install my electrochromatic mirror (sweet item). And guess what I discovered?? You guessed it Coolant all over the front of the engine on my hood and on the radiator. This time in much greater quantaties than last time.
I took the MBC off and had my techs, (I work as a Service Advisor for Toyota), check the car. Needless to say it failed our pressure test and my tech showed me the seam at the top of the radiator where coolant was leaking.
I took my Silver baby to Subaru at lunch time and dropped it off to be checked.
This time I had a tech come look at the car with me to show where we had observed the leak . Hopefully he will get the job done right this time. From what Im told I may be out of my car for at least a week as we all know how "easy" it is to get factory parts for our WRX.
Biggest insult is that we finally get a little drift weather, (some snow), and instead of having my AWD turbocharged rally inspired drift machine I get to drive in a dealer loaner, a Buick Lesabre .....
Hopefully I will get confirmation on whats going on tomorrow. I will keep you all informed....

Default faulty radiator

ya dude...i could've pointed you in that direction in the first place...i guess it's notorious of this type of radiator...it'll leak across the top seal down to the core. mine was also replaced because of this - they had to order the radiator, took 3 days, they forgot to call me and let me know what they found also, so if you're getting anxious, give em a call.

The inlet on my Accord snaped off while they were trying to remove the hose. These plastic radiators are crap.

I doubt the cap caused the fundamental problem, likely just a fault in the radiator.

I wonder how much Fluidyne would charge for a nice aluminum piece.

Hmmm, very interesting!!! My WRX smells of coolant as well after longer drives. I also have been finding traces of dried up coolant spots in the engine compartment. I already asked my dealer about this and they found nothing. I'll definatley be planning a return trip now.

Thanks for the heads up! Now I have some ammo.

I have had the same problem and my radiator was replaced under warranty. Though they didn't wipe up the coolant that dried in the engine compartment

You can tell if you have problems by looking at the top of the radiator and if you see dried coolant around the top.

It took 6 days to get my car back and it drove me nuts!!! So I drove there rental car (ford focus) into the ground.

Unhappy Oh sheit.....

Guys, the simptoms of your leaks didn't by any chance start of by smelling coolant from in and around the car did they? I have been smelling coolant in and around my car for a few days now, I really hope that I don't have this problem, cause I will have to take all of my aftermarket parts off of the car to take it to the dealer .....Did any one have any after market parts on their cars when they took them to the dealer? If so did the dealer give them any crap about it?

Thanks Brian

Great I finally see someone else with this problem. I ran a search on antifreeze and I got one thing. My car is leaking antifreeze around the "seams" and is going in tomorrow. Dealer told me it was normal but I gave him the LOOK and he made me an appointment ASAP. I also marked this radiator so I will be able to tell if they just cleaned up or actually replaced it. It is also going in for a whine from the turbo when cold at exactly 1600rpm's and from my boost bouncing around from .1 down to .05 and up and down, grrrrrr this car is getting me really aggrivated. Makes me think I just bought an american car. After all I haven't had any problems yet I got 8500 onthe ticker.

remove all mods. Last thing you want is the dealer saying you MBC raised boost pressure causing engine to run hotter causing radiator to go bad.......... Yes the 1st syntom is smelling coolant from engine

Question Where to check???

Where should I check for leaks, I just got back from checking the car for coolant and I couldn't find any except alittle dried up on the front of the timing belt cover. I checked all over the radiator and all of the hoses leading in and out of the radiator, but I didn't find anything.

Thanks Brian

WRX-U: I never smelled coolant in the cabin...However, you would be able to smell it standing out in front of your car, or if you were under the hood looking around. You'll see a line of dried coolant across the top of the radiator, and possibly down one of the sides.

This problem seems to be becomming more and more common...Maybe we should contact a good radiator manufacturere (which one?) about a group buy for us.

Anyways, take care.

Default Well...

Okay, I have been smelling coolant in the cabin and around the car but I took the car on a hard drive and I don't see any wet or excesive coolant their is just a little bit (dried up) on the front left side of the engine on the timing belt cover, are their any ohter simptoms like the car overheating or anything like that. Now I am so worried, cause I hate dealing with the dealership. Oh well, I guess I will just see if the problem gets any worse, and hope fo the best.

Thanks for all of the help and info...

So far, the only symptoms I've had as been the smell from inside the car at idle after a long drive and the coolant marks in the engine compartment.

Now that I think of it, the last time I asked the Dealer to check the rad, they said it was fine, but that they had filled up the coolant because it was low. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out there may be a leak given that info now does it!

Oh well, must book appointment next week!

Guys,

A lot of leaks have been reported due to insufficienty tightened hose clamps on the radiator according to my dealer. I too was smelling coolant occassionally and finally noticed a couple of drops on my garage floor. The lower radiator hose clamp was not tight.

Mine is on the sides not just the bottom. the front section too has damp spots. Going to the dealer tomorrow. Hopefully the fluctuating boost gets fixed too.
