Default Adventures in Tinting

OK, well, I got some computer precut tint off of eBay, it cost me $25 (bootprint on tint included free from their factory!), I went to install it this evening.

First I cleaned all the windows with Windex, twice. Then I read the instructions... they say not to do that. Uhhhhh... okay. So I did it their way with the solution they sent me and a squeegee and their "no lint" rag they sent. It left more streaks than my double cleaning with Windex, not to mention that "no lint" stuff was all over the window, but that's how they say to do it, so whatever. (I actually cleaned the lint from their "no lint" rag off with a plain ol' paper towel, shhhhh!)

Instructions say: "use tape to separate the protected sheet from tint." /spend 20 minutes trying to find tape. Decide I don't have any fingernails should work. **tears the thin cheapo tint whilst trying to get it apart... Damn!

Decide it's just a small tear, no one will notice. Pull protective sheet from tint completely, realize I have the wrong side. Damn, damn!

Go to other side of car, spray it all down with their included "solution"... (water and soap) Stick it on the window, align it nicely and start squeegeeing. Realize I should have started squeegeeing from the other corner, too late now. Everything meets right in the lower front corner where the gasket for the mirror and lower window meet. (a conspiracy)

Try to use included plastic gasket tool to tuck tint under gaskets, tint tears. Get pissed, decide I must tuck lower front corner first, so I yank tint out from under gasket, the bits that made it under anyway, tint tears even more. Damn, damn, damn!

Final step, rip tint off and crumple it up into little ball, look at rest of tint pieces laying on workbench, decide they are useless without the driver's side window which I just destroyed, get pissed again and crumple them up into little balls too. Crap!

You get what you pay for...

Tint job, 20 mins, not bad.

I have before and after pics too...

I couldn't stop laughing while reading that I know tint can be a pain but I have done the front windows on mine more times than I can count with the walmart stuff and had it down after the first time. Reason for them saying not to use windex is because it contains ammonia and ammonia eats the tint up. A mild handsoap/water mix is best and I found it doesn't matter what side you start on. Sorry it didn't work out for you. I'll help next time if you like.

You should send the tint back to them now and tell them something is wrong with it.

Best thing to do for first time tint'ers is to remove the door panel and cut the tint 1/2 inch below where the window seal is... works like a charm!

Dangit... I'm glad my misery has entertained you all.

I'll probably try it again myself just once, then leave it to the professionals. I'll get some more precut tint, it really was sweet having it all laser cut already. I might try a different vendor, there are literally 100's of tint vendors on eBay.

Next time I buy though I'm going to make sure I see 3M as the brand they're selling, I've heard that's the brand to get. Any opinions?

I too am sorry I didn't save the rest of the pieces, but I wasn't exactly in the best of moods or thinking too clearly at that point in time. I would have probably picked up some Wal-Mart stuff to replace the one I crumpled, it can't have been any worse quality, this stuff I had was sorta brittle and thin and tore easy, total rubbish.

It's going to be a month or so until I try again as I will just remove the door panels when I do it next, and I won't be doing that until I upgrade the speakers to something better, which I have to save for.

I just hope to hell there isn't another one of these posts from me when it comes time to install my Cobb springs!

make sure you razor the entire glass surface w/ professional aersol glass cleaner. dry with a squeege, no lint.

then, throw away the crap they sent you, and use baby shampoo.
