I just finished up changing out the rear fluid with some Mobil 1 Syn. I noticed that the rear cover of the diff is different than that of the one in the owners manual. The one on my car has a drain plug facing the rear of the car and the fill hole facing the passenger side rear tire. While surfing I noticed that STi sold a rear diff cover with cooling fins build into it that looked just like the one on my car. At the Soob dealer nobody knew the anser of course, STi jeez what's that??? But I checked under all of the cars there and none of them had the cooling fins, not the H6 VDC, the base Imp, nor the base Forest. What is up, any body know what is going on?

That's purty interesting. I've never seen a diff cover like the one you're describing on your car. Did you get the car new or used? Every once in a while I hear about little production anomalies - perhaps that's what you've got.

If you wanna see what it looks like there is a picture of it listed under Products, Drivetrain, Diffs. STi.
I really dont understand it, first I thought that it was only because I do not have a LSD on the rear, but the base Impreza does not have a LSD rear and it has the same housing as the VDC/LL Bean and 2.5RS. So, what the heck??? Tim |

I wonder if that hole is the vent.
My front diff does have fins. Roger [This message has been edited by subarurabbit (edited March 07, 2001).] |

Very old thread I know, but I just looked under mine today and I have the same cover described in the post. Will try to get a pic later. Anyone know why some are different?
