Default On the first day of Christmas, my Subaru gave to me...

SEVEN TROUBLE CODES!!!

Hey guys (and girls) I'm obviously new to this forum...but I honestly don't know where else to turn. I have a 1992 Subaru Legacy Wagon (non-turbo, MT). The car has roughly 200,000 miles on it...and up until this point, has run pretty damn good. But....

Lately, the car has been trying to stall. Today, it finally did. I checked the codes and received a 23: Mass Air Flow Sensor. Now, obviously, this would probably mean that the part was bad. Just for ****s and giggles, I disconnected the battery and reset the diagnostic system. I started the car, and it still ran pretty poorly, but now it is throwing a whole handful of codes, but not the MAF sensor.

12 - Ignition Switch
Its obviously not the ignition switch. The car is starting just fine, and the components controlled by this part are operating correctly, as they should. Stupid.

24 - Idle Air Control Valve
Expensive as hell. I don't want this to be the problem. The idle is VERY sporadic. It steadily bounces up and down until the car finally stalls. But again, this just started today. It was doing this BEFORE disconnecting the battery...when the only code was 23 - Mass Air Flow. I'm thinking about taking the part off and cleaning it just for the hell of it.

45 - Atmospheric Pressure Sensor (MAP/BARO Sensor)
I honestly don't think this is right. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, maybe I'm just thinking ignorantly...but I don't think this car even has a MAP sensor. It has a MAF sensor...obviously (I can see it!).

14, 15, 16, 17 - Fuel Injectors
IGNORANT DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM! The injectors are obviously working if the car is running. Albeit, they may not be working correctly. But the car could obviously be having a chain reaction of problems. The fact that the car decided to throw a plethora of codes AFTER I reset the system just pisses me off.

What do you think the most likely of my problems is? The only code that was being thrown PRIOR to resetting the system was the Mass Air Flow Sensor. Expertise would be appreciated. Thank you much in advance.

Maybe instead of relying on a diagnostic system that is running without one of it's major sensors (MAF), you could try cleaning the MAF, reinstalling it, and resetting the car and seeing what codes trip that time.

It's highly likely that at 200k a bunch of sensors that are reading off of one another don't have enough life left in them to compensate.

Much like O2 sensors degrade over time.

Already tried cleaning the MAF out. Didn't make any difference at all. Any clue where the MAP sensor might be at (if its even on this piece of junk)

well then, maybe you should replace the MAF as your car clearly doesn't have a MAP sensor. How long has the idle speed been erratic?

Have you checked bbs.legacycentral.org?

I think that's the best place for you. Maybe PM DLC.

I guess now you know that disconnecting the MAF is going to result in the ECU having a BIG hissy... OBDII systems are more sophisticated...
