Question Old School legacy missing/stumbling problem

My dad has a '90 model Legacy, 2.2 auto

He had problems with overheating, but it was fixed with a radiator
Now, it is intermittently missing, dying and stumbling while driving.
Somehow he thought it was the MAF sensor, and changed it. Did not fix

I thought maybe a fuel pump, but he says it has good fuel pressure.
We are both reasonably mechanically inclined, but know nothing of these vehicles
Anyone know somewhere else to start?

I want to do compression checks and pull the spark plugs tommorrow

Thanks for any advice

Things that come to mind are spark plugs, fuel filter, and knock sensor.

Are they any stored codes?

connect the black connectors under the dash and turn the key to on. The CEL will flash the codes. Long flashes are the first digit and short flashes are the second digit.

Legacy777's website had more detailed instructions.

Could also be engine damage due to the over heating ... Are you refilling coolant on a regualar bais ? Any smoke ?

No usage of coolant or oil. No smoking
Like I said, the problem is only intermittent. It will run fine for 30 minutes or so, then strike, sputter and die. Does it idling and while driving. And when its taking one of these 'spells' it acts like it wont take fuel. Tries to die when you give it fuel
