Talking Tanabe Racing Medallion Catback WRX

I was a little worried at first about the exhaust looking and sounding like the typical Honda fart-can. But in my opinion the exhaust looks great on the WRX, as long as I can get myself to keep it shiny (any suggestions on products?). My 11 year old son and I put it on in about an hour, which I thought was pretty good for an exhaust novice. The exhaust w/o the silencer is pretty loud, but not a cheapo sounding rice loud, a really good boxer engine loud...but still loud. With the silencer it still sounds good and will keep me on the good side of the cops and the wife (though my son insists that we keep the silencer off, especially if I take him to school). I would love to see some exhaust dyno results as there is obviously an improvement here. While the gain is not earth-shattering, there is noticeably improvement in spooling and perhaps a few extra horses. I also noticed that most of the previous "hesitation" at WOT is gone. I cannot compare this exhaust with any other for the WRX, as this is the only one I have seen; but I would recommend it to anyone looking for a catback.

Yes it is SS. I paid $525 + ship. from Bottle at Titan Motorsports. AFS are offering them for same price including shipping, but they did not have one in stock, and I did not feel like waiting.

I'm not much for stickers myself, if they want me to advertise their product they should pay me However, my son likes stickers, so the next time it snows he will hear: "Son, if you clear the driveway I will give you this super-duper-special-rare and collectible Tanabe sticker!"

I've been looking at that system. Will it work without modifications if the car has a differential protector? Also, just how loud is it?

it will clear the diff protector. BUT! I dunno if others are having this problem, SOMETIMES during idle, it vibrates against the diff causing a pretty nasty sounding hitting-a-can noise. I want to put something inbetween them for an easy fix but too lazy.

Use the Cusco or Kartboy exhaust hangers to prevent the rattles.

I am pretty sure that god's downpipe uses the stock dimensions, so, yes. And you are going to love this catback. I decided to keep the silencer off as the sound is awesome, havent listen to the stereo since I got it. I felt it was pretty loud at first, but that was only because I was so used to the super silent stock exhaust. Where did you find it, a lot of people have been trying to find it as many vendors now have it on back-order? And get some good polish, because this exhaust looks sweet!!

Thanks for the info MrSwede, can't wait to get this baby installed and later follow up with a godspeed downpipe.

I found it in stock at www.optauto.com for $560 shipped. AFSMotorsports and TitanMotorsports are on back order until March, and the vendor 'Gunn' hasn't been replying to his Tanabe exhaust threads.

Versus,

So, your Tanabe Racing Medallion is hitting the differential or differential protector? Sounds like the pipe routing must be pretty tight in some spots.

Your input is appreciated.

I have a perrin up-pipe, HKS downpipe and a Racing Super Medallion. If you are wondering if it is loud... ...Heck YEAH IT IS!!!! Under 3000rpms, It's not too bad, But beyond that, it is super loud. Not Really inside the car, but outside. The loud noise is kinda strange too. Like a short low note from a Large trumpet, looped over and over really fast. A low note, But not Bassey at all. When the windows are up, the sound doesn't really intrude into the cabin, but when you are next to a wall or another car with the windows open, You Hear it big time. I'm still not sure if I like it.

In addition to this, The HKS downpipe eliminates the stock doughnut gasket after where the last cat was. It is replaced by a standard exhuast gasket with a 3 inch opening. The problem comes in where the begining of the Tanabe has the receiving end of the ball joint, with a loose (free floating) flange. The doughnut gasket cannot be used at all. I am a little concerned that the free floating flange may leak, without the proper doughnut gasket in place. I may have to get it welded. Or try to line it with some blue silicone. I still have yet to confirm a leak, I am just speculating at this point.

I'll let you guys know as soon as I find out.

cheers,
Brian
