If you have the desire to go to college, you should do AFROTC then. At 19, you have plenty of time.

That way you will have an opportunity to go for a pilot allocation (F-22 pathway right now is not immediate, but you'll love flying ANY airframe) or as an aircraft maintenance officer. Get school paid for and the like.

Could any of you in here elaborate for me the pros and cons of each and why one is better that the other. I live in a small farm town in Ohio and I really wouldnt mind getting out of here but then again idk if im ready to leave my family and everything i know behind. I'm 19, I have a lot of life ahead of me.. and this is something i really want to do. I just cant make up my mind.
Haha, trust me - going into the Air Force is definitely NOT "Balls out"... Join the Marine Corps if you want that

Personally as someone who joined the Marines right out of High School and LOVED IT!!! I'd say go active duty man... Whatever the branch you do, go ACTIVE while you are young and can travel!!... And when you are in Active Duty, start working on your college degree... If you want to be a pilot in the Air Force one day you are going to need atleast a 3.0gpa and you'll have to be IN the pilot training program no later than 27 years old... And the Air Force doesn't give age waivers, they already have too many people wanting to be pilots in there...

I'm AD Air Force and I agree with what he said .. go active duty first, get a free education then go into Officer Training School (OTS).
Maintenance will be hard. you will work long hours and work in a high tempo environment, but it is pretty cool. I did maintenance for 6 years before I cross-trained into an admin job.
If you have any questions feel free to ask me.
BTW, the best officers I have ever met have been prior enlisted

+1. Becoming an officer through ROTC is easier than enlisting and hoping to do it that way. It can be done, but once you enlist, you have responsibilities and distractions. If you did well in high school and think you can stay focused through college, investigate that before you sign up. Contact the ROTC detachments at your local colleges, see what they'll offer and investigate school loans.

If you enlist (still a great idea for many folks), you gotta figure out what job you really want to do. Some of the career fields are spending lots of time in the desert...which may make getting a degree while enlisted more difficult. The flip side is doing something you hate so you can get your degree...in which case I think you should do ROTC rather than enlisting. Find folks who are in each career field you are thinking of and get their thoughts.

Good luck.

soobiedoo55, I highly suggest going officer first if you want to be a pilot. It's very hard to go from enlisted to officer pilot.

Going officer from enlisted isn't too hard, but getting to be a pilot it is, you gotta be ***** hot.

If you do go enlisted active, I think you'll find it's not bad though, all the guys I know in the AF like it.

Just don't join the Navy and get my job, 90% of nukes are malcontent in one way or another. The only thing that keeps us going is the retarded amount of money we get paid since the Navy wants to retain us so bad.

Where do you get this info cheshiregizmo? Three routes to become an officer: OTS, ROTC, or the Academy. All three hash out where someone goes, to include becoming a pilot. I can't speak to OTS, but the other two routes have a good percentage of folks who are eligible get pilot slots.
