Exclamation Looks like Jacques is staying with BAR (so far)

Many watched and waited with interest as 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve had his first taste of the BAR004 at Barcelona yesterday, with strong speculation that the Canadian driver could walk from the team if he wasn't happy with improvements made to the British American Racing's newest challenger. However, just like his teammate Olivier Panis, the French/Canadian emerged from the car and announced that he was pleased with the noticeable improvements.

Day three of BAR's first test of the season saw Villeneuve join Panis on track for his first run in the BAR004. Once again, changeable weather conditions limited the team's running time today and Olivier Panis was able to complete 42 laps in last years car, his fastest being a 01.22.790 while Villeneuve completed 43 laps in the new car, his fastest being a 1.22.817 on lap 34.

“The car has definitely improved and there's a lot more still to come. Also, the engine is still in its infancy so there's a lot more to come from that as well. There's good reason to be positive though. This year, the mechanical side of the car feels much better,” Villeneuve remarked. “The rear is a lot more stable, and in high speeds the car seems to be more stable as well. As this is just a first preliminary test there will be some more changes for the next test so I'll be back in the car then. We knew there was going to be a big difference in the car this year and so it's nice to get in it and see those improvements. The car feels good so I'm feeling positive.”

Engineering Director, Malcolm Oastler, was similarly optimistic about the progress being made….

“Jacques has been here for today to try out the car and give us his initial feedback, which has been very positive,” he said. “So far he's happy with the changes we've made. We're running a very preliminary spec with the car and engine here this week though so Jacques is happy to wait until next week in Valencia to test the car further.”

At the mid point of this week-long test session, Chief Engineer Steve Farrell was also happy with the way things were moving along, despite the weather conditions.

“Today was the first opportunity for Jacques to have a run in the new car. The weather was not particularly favourable but he was able to do some laps in the dry, during which time he confirmed Olivier's optimistic feedback from Monday. Olivier has been in the BAR003 today, continuing with some of the aerodynamic testing started by Anthony earlier in the week. Again we were somewhat interrupted by the weather but we've made some good progress nonetheless.”

I sure would like JV to win a race. I hesitate to say it will happen next year, but that would be nice.

The BAR and Jodan are still sharing the Honda engine right?

It would be nice to have a few more teams that can actually compete. The past few years it's been a two or three team show with a bunch of "also rans"

it is believed that Jacque has get out clauses in his contract. Most people believe he will race for BAR in Australia, if the car is hopeless he could walk.

The most likely outcome from this would be a swap between Renault driver Jenson Button and Jacque as Briatore wants jacque badly and isnt much of a fan of Button's.

I dont see frentzen in the picture at all to be honest.

john, you read my mind! i was just reading something that said if JV chooses to walk before Melbourne, HHF is the best candidate for BAR since he hasn't officially signed with anyone yet (unless you have some insight?), and i was thinking: where could JV go? McLaren and Renault were the 2 names that came up last year when JV's contract was up in the air, and the former seem to be quite happy with their current driver lineup......

but honestly i do hope JV stays with BAR

I would imagine in 3 days or so we will know what Frentzen is doing.

Prost has until the 15th to find a backer, otherwise the team folds. If Prost does survive then i expect Frentzen will drive for them in 2002. If Prost doesnt get it's required backing and has to shut then i expect Frentzen will take Jos Verstapen's seat at Arrows.

Verstappen has a contract for 2002 for Arrows but the team is refusing to name it's second driver, i think they are waiting for the Prost/Frentzen situation to pan out and will dump Jos if they can get HHF.
