Default Head bolt torque delima. (02 Service manual)

Here's my delima.

I have completed assembling my motor but as I have in the past I used the 02 service manual. The problem lies in the head torque sequence which is apparently very different from the 03 service manual and the 03 is different from the 05 manual.

02: http://65.6.129.58/public/02WRXHeadInstallation.mht

03: http://65.6.129.58/public/2003FSM.pdf

05: http://65.6.129.58/public/2005FSM.pdf

My question is do I need to pull the engine apart and completely redo the head gaskets or can I just go tighten the bolts in order to what ever the final torque spec should be?

Does anyone know what the final torque is?

thanks
Mike

Pretty sure there is not a final "torque"

As far as I know the last two steps are 90degree turn increments.

i understand the sequence but I was more concerned that the 02 manual says after backing off 180 twice to torque the inner bolts to 26 lbs and the outside bolts to 11. The 05 manual says to torque them all to 36 lbs. That discrepency before you start the final 90 degree turns is what has me concerned.

Since they aren't currently torqued as tight as they would be with the 05 manual I am just going to back everything off and start the whole sequence again.

My bit of advise from all this is that anyone who is using an 02 manual should throw it away and get a newer one. Along with the incorrect sequence for the headbolts it also has the wrong torque values for the front cam caps. I found that out the hard way too the first time I pulled the heads.

So Mike, you're suggesting that even though I have an '02 I should follow the '05 fsm?

Yes. The torque sequence in the manual is the same one used for the older sohc heads. It worked fine for me in the past but I am going to be pushing closer to 500whp with my new set up and I am not comfortable with it.

I don't have the full manual. All I have for the 05 is the link above.

Sorry to butt in here, but I am currently building an 02 motor and havent installed the cams yet.

What do you mean by the torque values are wrong for the cam caps? What will happen? where can i get the right ones?

Also will i run into problems using the older headbolt specs?

Thanks

I snapped one of the cam cap bolts. The manual says 14 ftlbs for the front and 14 for the ones under the valve cover. The ones on the front (outside the valve cover) should only be 7 ft lbs.

I never had an issue with the headbolts using the old routine but I am certain Subabru revised it for a reason.
