Default Looking to Buy GC8 Coupe and I Need Help.

I've had my 98' 240sx since 2000 and now I want to trade or sell it for a GC8 but, I don't really know which is best for me (i.e 2.5 RS vs Impreza L).

I don't want a sunroof so I was looking at the L models but, I don't know what else the type L lacks and if it'd just be best to get an RS.

Future plans include a WRX or STI engine swap and supporting mods to reach STI spec.

To be even more technical, either a GM2 (Brighton coupe, 1.8L), GM4 (L coupe with 2.2L) or GM6 (2.5RS with 2.5L).

Though GC8 is used by everyone (and I like it because it gets past the search filter )

Biggest differences are how big of an engine you want (1.8, 2.2 or 2.5L?), with or without ABS (standard on RS, option for L in some years, unavailable in other years), and with or without a rear LSD (00 or 01 RS). And of course how much money you want to spend since I've seen some ridiculous prices on RSs.

Thanks guys.

Almost EVERYONE seems to use the Impreza chassis codes incorrectly. Thanks for setting me straight and the additional information so I can make better research.

I can't get straight answers this fast on the Nissan forums

how many miles on your 240sx, i got a l i might trade!

anyways, all L's except for one(or 2) year model have drum brakes rear. Its a very easy swap to convert it to disk though. The L is lighter chasis but lacks the style of the 2.5rs, with a little money though will look just as good.

55,6xx and stock

I'm going to rebuild my beater S13 and S13 project cars before I get rid of the S14.

How deep into a build are you looking to go?
The RS is fun out of the box, I think the L lacks quite a bit but I mean if it's simply the chassis you want there is nothing wrong with an L.

I want to build the RS to version 6 spec (give or take some cosmetics), but I want an enjoyable car with "out of the box" fun to drive around as I source parts and build funds.

I'm leaning towards an RS right now.

If you want a car to rip apart and build up to STi spec, this means a total engine/ecu/drivetrain swap, so your best bet is to buy an Impreza L sedan or wagon because you will only need the chassis.
I dont know how much research you've done, but doing an STI swap is the grandaddy of all the Suby swaps, because if you plan on retaining the 6MT you need to swap in the diffs, hubs, axles, etc. etc. It is way harder than a WRX engine swap, so you should get the cheapest car you can find and go nuts with it. You can make an L look like a 2.5RS or JDM WRX STi just by changing a few body panels and painting everything to match.

If you are not planning on an engine swap, get the RS

L has a lot less HP, different body panels, different interior, different suspension

It's not an RS

If you ARE planning on an engine swap
then you have $ to burn, so get an L and swap to ya hearts content

Thumbs up oooooh, Subie Gal!

Thanks for reaffirming the ugLy truth.

I foresee this build taking about 2 years. I just didn't want to be driving the boring L car during that time.

Time to continue my search for a RS I mean L car

Not sure right now.

Lx would be the best option for what you are looking for.

LX - 2.2L AWD 5spd Coupe rear discs fold down rear seats no sunroof...

Suspension mods = Plenty of fun out of the box.

You may want to look into the wagon build as well, there pretty sick not too mention like one of the lightest GC chassis.
Well whatever you decide good luck with the build, look forward to seeing it!
