Girl is looking to get me a cheap xmas present... I stumbled across a tomtom gps unit the other day and was well impressed with how easy it was to use... anyone have any comments - i think the valentine v1 is out of the price range

It standard tom is good stuff. You can even download Mr. T as your navigator. Oh, and it's reliable too, got me and the whole family all throughout the SF Bay area no problem and back home.

before my avic d3 I used a magellan maestro 4040. way better than the tomtom imo and not to far off in price range for some of the maestro's.

My biggest complaint about my bro in laws gps compared to mine is the whole text to speach feature. Mine tells me the name of the road I am turning on, his doesn't. His says "in 200 yards turn right" mine says "in 200 yards turn right onto Dysart rd" It sounds kind of stupid, but it really is a nice feature.

I heard the road name feature is 'limited' on the tomtom - the garmin's name every road...

nuvi is the ****... 660 awesome but 650 will save a $100
A gps web site tested tomtom against garmin and magellan on the same level price range and garmin came out on top every time in terms of route calculation, time saving, and accuracy... This is just what I have been researching for lately, I have been hunting for a gps for a while. |

For the cost of a decent unit, why not just get an in-dash nav system, like on the AVIC-D3?
I have seen them go for as low as 600 sometimes. |
